[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I’d consider a paid subscription if this were an option.

I would love this feature. I play music with my kids in the car and don’t want to have to worry about profanity randomly coming out of my speakers.

It seems my email to Daniel Ek was intercepted by customer support. Here's the reply I got today. I suggest we keep the pressure on as having to make up our own "clean" playlists isn't what we need. That's a lot of work they expect their customers to do when they should have implemented an explicit filter years ago. I don't want to stop people listening to explicit versions if they want, I just want to be able to click on a Spotify playlist and know that my daughter isn't going to be subjected to random profanity. As a parent with a family account that my 14 year old uses independently, I want to know that she can be safeguarded from inappropriate material.

Hello xxxxx,

Spotify Customer Support here. We understand that you deem some of the content offered in the app inappropriate and we see where you're coming from. We've also located your previous email to Customer Support on the same subject and we'll gladly give you more info about this.

One of the main reasons why Spotify can sometimes include explicit content is to preserve the original vision of the artists. We do our best to mark such music with the EXPLICIT label on any releases (E on the web player) for transparency. This can help parents create non-explicit playlists for their children.

In addition to that, as our team mentioned in reply to your other email, we're testing new features to improve Spotify overall. One such improvement comes from the feedback we've received from fellow users such as yourself. We can confirm that we're currently working hard on introducing a way for our customers to have more control and to be able to directly filter explicit content.

We appreciate your input and your desire to make Spotify better and we hope you’ll continue to use the app, and find it gets better in the future. Stay tuned for updates.

In the meantime, do let us know if we can help with anything else.

Take care,

Andrey

-"We can confirm that we're currently working hard on introducing a way for our customers to have more control and to be able to directly filter explicit content"  True???

Sounds very different from the "our hands are tied" response I got a week or so ago. The whole "original vision of the artist" is such a load of horse **bleep**, you could fertilize a farm with that **bleep** response.

I’d prefer to avoid the vision of quite a few of these artists then. Who
pays them for this garbage.

With Spotify being attached to common area devices like Google home the need for this feature is just a no brainer.  It's a common feature in all the competing music services and the music is already tagged.

The family plan is seriously not family friendly...  will probably stick to Apple Music and cancel my premium Spotify service.   Logged in 2012...  so many comments...  and no sign...  it's just not a priority for the business.

Unbelievable that after 5 years, over 10,000 votes and over 370 pages of comments - Spotify have still done absolutely nothing about this.

Some of the lyrics on Spotify content are really disgusting and I don't want our children being exposed to it (some of it I don't want to hear, and I'm not sensitive to language generally).

So there is no way I can use Spotify whenever the children are home - hugely limiting. And there is no way therefore that I can justify paying for the service until this feature is available.

What a massive oversight from Spotify when a big chunk of your target market who have disposable income are alsolikely to have families.

Please Add this feature, I would like to take advantage of my Family plan, however after seeing this 5-year-old thread, I am concerned.  I was in the process of adding my 3 young girls to my family account, however to my surprise I didn’t see any type of controls to disable explicit content.  Now I am at a loss. It wouldn’t be a hard feature to add, and I think sales would be boosted by this feature.... Spotify could market to families with small children as did YouTube with their product YouTube kids....
