[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I don't understand why they don't do it! What harm can it do giving customers a simple option on how they want to enjoy their service?

This is something a conscientious provider would have by default - they are able to tell us if it is EXPLICIT meaning they could filter it easilly - but I guess they are worried it would reduce play counts but that is short sighted.

Actually, it being labelled Explicit has nothing to do with how easy it is to filter out. That said, it shouldn't be a terribly hard thing to code, and the only thing keeping Spotify from at least giving it a try is either laziness or their disregard for our demographic (we're either religious or prudes IMHO, lol).

@JustAnotherJay  EXCELLENT ARticle.  Would you be OK if I linked it on the website I created.  It needs some life put on it.

For everyone else - Keep the pressure up.  Here's the list of steps to take that I've accumulated from this forum.

Steps to "Maybe" change their Ideological Minds: (Hopefully)

  1. A MUST IMHO:  Either manually or automatically Forward ALL status emails from this thread to Support@spotify.com
  2. Go to the App store for your particular device and give the a 1 star rating stating that lack of "explicit" filter is the reason
  3. Email support@spotify.com and indicate to them your intentions
  4. Tweet @SpotifyCares @spotify  and demand they put an Explicit filter
  5. If you feel comfortable, visit a website we put together to try and focus efforts;   http://spotifyexplicitbutton.com
  6. Contact some sort of media outlet to possibly shame them into doing something!
  7. Turn this thread in to a review of other services and how to change to that service. Apple music using “SongShift” app to transfer playlists

@paul_mccroreyby all means, a link back is no problem...

Seriously Spotify???!!!! This has been a suggestion for over FIVE years!!! And you offer a family plan without the option to block explicit lyrics???? I am not software developer, but even I know that this would not be hard AT ALL.  I am livid.  I just put on the headphones of what my 8 year old was listening to and heard language talking about women that I never ever ever EVER wanted his ears to hear.  EVEN AS AN ADULT.  GET IT TOGETHER SPOTIFY. . YOU OWE THIS TO YOUR CUSTOMERS.  I will be cancelling my plan ASAP if I don't see that this is put into place like IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Thanks for this I have reposted on Facebook. With the upcoming IPO, the timing is right to apply max pressure.

Suggest creating a public relations issue for Spotify.  Maybe then this arrogant "I don't care what customers want" company will wake up:   Here are some ways to contact various organizations to submit story ideas/tips.

As people probably know, Daniel Ek is the Spotify CEO.   According to Wikipedia he has 2 children.  I have to think as a father, he would not want his kids lisiting to explitives, S*x filled lyrics, etc.  Interestingly, on Twitter, his description of himself says "Father, CEO and Founder of Spotify".  I would be led to believe he views himself as a father first.

Since all these comments (300+ pages) don't seem to be having an effect within Spotify.  Suggest all those who want parental controls for explicit content (songs, albums, artists, podcasts, etc.) reach out to Daniel Ek on social media:

In addition to explicit music, browsing through podcasts in the Lifestyle category and get to see podcasts like "Guys We F*****d", "**bleep** with Emily", "Loveline with Amber Rose", "**bleep** Gets Real", "The Prude and the Porn Star", "**bleep** Lives" and more.

These types of podcasts with explicit content need to be disabled.  Spotify is basically allowing any age kid (including teens) to hear explicit dicussions about A**l **bleep**, "mast**bation" etc.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.  Expecially when Spotify rolls out a "family plan".  Until these types of podcasts can be disabled via parental controls, the podcasts should be disabled!!!!
