[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I cancelled my membership in the end. Apparently, they were sad to see me go and asked me if this or that was the reason why in an exit survey. Cue long rant in the "other reason" box.

As I was searching the internet on how to block this when stumbled upon several requests also found this page dated back from 2013, where an user created an app to block explicit content but the app was declined..

An app is not the preferred solution, but I think it shows where the focus of Spotify is..

Spotify what's going on?

Please give us some feedback regarding this idea, even if this is negative which will bring us to the conclusion to look for an alternative solution.

I like the Spotify app, I like the Spotify interface way over the Apple Music service, but I'm seriously thinking to cancel now.

I cancelled my premium subscription today. Here is the comment I left in the cancellation form to Spotify:
Spotify does not have an explicit content filter. This appears to be a deliberate choice as this has been one of the most highly voted for Ideas on your forum since 2012 and there have been no updates from staff since 2016. Requests made to Spotify for this feature on twitter are either ignored or receive a highly standardised, impersonal response. It is unclear that any support staff or Rockstar is dedicating time to this issue.
Moreover, "family plans" cannot reasonably be called as such while this feature is missing and parents are unable to control the content which their children listen to. This is especially relevant when playlists curated by spotify and Radio playlists feature explicit content.
The feature itself is a small, but highly important one. I will not be subscribing to Spotify again until this feature is implemented.

Hi @Nicolapoppy, thanks for setting up the change.org petition. I've just pinned it to my twitter bot (@shameonspotify) that retweets all these forum comments. Hopefully this gets some traction.

I have a spotify family plan and we like to listen to Spotify via the amazon echo but I'm going to cancel my account.  My 5 and 7 year old keep asking for songs and plays them with explicit lyrics.

This is crazy to not offer this especially for those of us using your music to teach class to the general public. This is an obvious need!

Please add this feature spotify i think its a great idea. We have family premium and 2 of my children cant use there account because of the bad language.

It is obvious that Spotify either (a) have legal / contractual issues or (b) just don't care about families.  They are not making an effort to even go go a half-way acceptable point.

To give an example of what they could do WITH NO IMPACT TO THEIR CONTRACTUAL ARRANGEMENTS, firstly consider that they already carry 'alternative' clean versions of some songs.  These are apparently available if you dig through the application interface, though bizarrely, the option to switch is NOT available on mobile (iOS or Android).  To which the obvious question is, why on earth is this feature not on mobile? I would hazard that mobile users must form the massive majority of all Spotify regular listeners.

Secondly, songs are (generally) tagged when they have explicit content.  I can understand that this might not be true 100% of the time, which is what may be causing Spotify to put this issue into the "too hard" basket.  But consider this option - provide the ability to automatically play a non-explicit version of the song where the song is marked explicit and where a non-explicit version is available.  This has the followng advantages:

  1. can be implemented now - no new data or songs are needed
  2. no need to promise that no explicit content will be played
  3. and hence no need to curate 100% of content going into the catalogue for explicit words
  4. no need to stop playing explicit content if no alternative is available
  5. and hence, no impact on any contractual arrangements Spotify may have with artisits

This would allow Spotify to reach a comprimise position which would be far more acceptable than the status quo for the thousands of users who have asked for this feature over many years. No, it's not perfect, but I for one would place huge **bleep** on such a compromise.

And once in place, Spotify only has to work on their submission process or their technology to identify explicit songs, and to encourage artists to provide non-explicit versions of songs, for their to be a continual improvement in the quality of the content available to families.

COME ON SPOTIFY - SHOW THAT YOU CARE ABOUT FAMILIES AND AT LEAST IMPLEMENT THIS COMPROMISE POSITION!!!

No idea why they *bleeped* the word k*u*d*o*s!

Seriously? FIVE YEARS? Over 400 comments, thousands of signatures, and nobody's been bothered to devote any resources to this?

A: there are customers who genuinely won't bother purchasing premium if they can't rely on censoring for their specific environment.

B: wow do you guys look incompetent on this.
