[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Well done Spotify.

Music plays an important role in the socialization of children and adolescents. Popular music is present almost everywhere, and it is easily available through the radio, various recordings, the Internet, and new technologies, allowing adolescents to hear it in diverse settings and situations, alone or shared with friends. Parents often are unaware of the lyrics to which their children are listening because of the increasing use of downloaded music and headphones. Research on popular music has explored its effects on schoolwork, social interactions, mood and affect, and particularly behavior. The effect that popular music has on children’s and adolescents’ behavior and emotions is of paramount concern. Lyrics have become more explicit in their references to drugs, s ex and violence over the years, particularly in certain genres. A teenager’s preference for certain types of music could be correlated or associated with certain behaviors. As with popular music, the perception and the effect of music-video messages are important, because research has reported that exposure to violence, sexual messages, sexual stereotypes, and use of substances of abuse in music videos might produce significant changes in behaviors and attitudes of young viewers. Pediatricians and parents should be aware of this information. Furthermore, with the evidence portrayed in these studies, it is essential for pediatricians and parents to take a stand regarding music lyrics. - The American Academy of Pediatrics

It **bleep** that in a work environment, I have to listen to my coworker's pandora playlists all the time because he can filter explicit content and I can't do this on my spotify. Seeing that this concern has been going on for over five years, I am not getting my hopes up. After my annual subscription, if this is not resolved, I will be exploring other options considering most of my listening is usually at school or at work: two places where I am in mixed company. PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ASAP SPOTIFY!!!

Can you add this feature? Please. Doesn't feel good to pay for a service that give you songs you don't want to listen to. This is actually a distraction to me, because I have to stop from being in-the-flow at work and change the track.

My child, 7 years old, just told me that he can hear the F-WORD and S-WORD in the song I am listening to. Come on, what is going to take to create a feature that will turn on/off explicit part of a song?

I switched recently from Apple Music and the lack of this feature is irritating.  With Apple I was able to block content that had explicit lyrics.  I really don't want my kids talking to my Google Home and hearing swearing.

I get premium with vodafone, so I didn’t do too much research on Spotify but i’m astonished after listening to children’s film soundtracks that songs with explicit lyrics come on. And that there isn’t even a simple filter never mind age-appropriate stuff because frankly I don’t care about the swear words but people like Katy Perry singing to her target audience of 8 year old girls about threesomes, breaking the law, drinking, and being eaten off is really disturbing. No way to filter. And this forum tells me Spotify thinks filtering is a good idea. Really? But no intention of doing anything about it. I’m deleting Spotify and certainly won’t be lured by it into another Vodafone contract either.

409 pages and five years of content asking for this feature. Still nothing? Guess we're going back to Apple Music.

What, wait, are you saying that Apple has this? Hmmm... I'll have to give
them a try. Spotify seriously embarrassed me and my friends at a family
event. Cannot trust ANY play list created by anyone, even Spotify. I'd
have to spend time to create my own, sort of defeats the purpose if I
cannot listen others and just skip the explicit songs....
