[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I have to maintain 2 copies of my playlists - my normal playlists and my "work" copies.  If I want to the "radio," I just cannot while at work.  Please add some sort of profanity-filtering toggle.  Sometimes I may want to listen to Nine Inch Nails radio at work, but it sort of sucks when "Closer" starts playing.

Give us an option to hear explicit songs only unless there is no other version of the song available. I don't want to hear edited versions. I am an adult and shouldn't be forced to listen to songs with glurps, whirrs, missing words, or any other masking sounds

Can't believe 2 years later this is still not sorted!

Here's how to do it if you are having a problem:

1. Have known explicit tracks flagged in Spotify

2. Have a facility for users to flag tracks as explicit in Spotify - When spotify gets a few requests for the same track - review it and approve it to be flagged - crowd sourced censorship yeah!  🙂

3. Have a family filter option on the Spotify app that you can enable with a password

4. Any tracks with explicit flags are skipped in a playlist when the family filter is on and are hidden or unavailable to be played from the Spotify discover/search/content library.

5. If you're really clever, you could even substitute the links from the explicit version of some popular tracks to a radio version when the family filter is on.

C'mon. You are smart people. This is an important ask from your users.

The original post is 2 years old, and no changes since then. I imagine there was feedback prior to 2012 that caused you to create this sticky post in the first place. Please, listen to your users' problem. At the very least, please allow us to skip any songs marked as 'Explicit'.

The entertainment industry is already doing plenty to separate me from my family; movies, television, technology targeted toward demographics that don't include families sharing their lives. Media for Me, media for You, but none for Us.

Yes, I would like this filter for my family, but also for myself. I find explicit lyrics offensive and intrusive. And lyrically lazy. I'd much prefer to listen to ads if you could use my monthly $5 to filter explicit songs instead.

This service would make Spotify go from awesome to spectacular.

This is a definite must. Am considering quitting Spotify since it doesn't have this feature. Will see how prompt they are in adding it.

I would like to add my voice to the addition of an explicit filter.  Now that my kids have discovered Spotify I may have to cancel my premium membership because there is no way for me to filter out the explicit songs.

This feature would be amazing to make sure the songs are appropriate for all ears.

Because nobody at Spotify wants to get off their fat butts and spruce up the music database with explicit filters, this makes it unusable for me. This is absolutely the only reason I am still paying for Pandora Premium instead of Spotify. If you updated with this feature, I would switch tomorrow.

Simple. Filter out:

Any song title with [EXPLICIT] in it the file title.

Any song that has lyrics with the swear words s###, f### and/or any slang word for sex, genitals, breasts, or buttocks.

I can filter out anything else manually. And if some songs accidentally get filtered out that are really ok, no one who is asking for this filter will care.

When I flick the switch I want it across the board -- no granular controls, etc., just to get it out the door. Work on precision/users/etc. later.
