[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Abosolutley, I keep getting in trouble because of that Mumford and Sons Song that has the F-word in it multiple times.  I don't want to down vote the band because I love them!  But I'd love to be able to skip that song or play the "radio" version when I'm at my desk.

Pandora has the option to disable explicit songs. When possible it'll play the non-explicit version instead, otherwise it just won't play it. With this option turned on in Pandora I never hear any explicit songs.

Hey, there! An explicit button would really come in handy for those who use Spotify at work. I'm a barista, and I would love to be able to play Spotify radio at the shop, but all it takes is one F-bomb as Mrs. McGuilicutty orders her latte, and.........

This would be very helpful in our work environment! We have been using spotify in our photography studio but we will have to move to Pandora until  you create an explicit filter!!!!

One way would be to have a button that allows user to exclude songs marked with the  "Explicit" tag while playing their playlist, radio mode, or for anytime they want while searching Spotify.

I do understand that there are a lot of songs without the "Explicit" tag that have language (usually a word or two) but that would have to be up to the user to monitor and know those.

Love this idea!

It's almost a year since the official reply "by sekuether21 on ‎18-02-2012 04:32 PM", and still there's no option to filter explicit content. 1 year is plenty of time to have taken this from "Under Consideration" to a working feature. Spotify obviously doesn't care about its users or they would implement this. I'm currently in the 30-day free trial of Premium but I won't be staying.

It's been nearly 12 months. Any decision on this please?

It's really hard to always be ready to skip songs in public playlists (like the top 100) when the kids are listening. I've already had to explain to the kids how they're not allowed use some of these words despite hearing them in songs. You're already skipping songs based on country, so it's clear that it's not implausible.

Thanks in advance.

When I looked at the title I had a different thought in mind, I actually assumed this was going to be about adding a button to mark whether a song not marked as explicit should be. Another topic probably reserved for something else, but I still enjoyed your brilliant idea though 🙂

Please can this be given some serious consideration. We've just got Spotify Premium for our household.

Right now, if you do a Spotify search for "Clive", you will turn up:

This Bloke Came Up To Me (Dudley Moore, Peter Cook)

Shall I just say - it's not music.

If Spotify are worried about the support overhead or liability implications, I'd say a crowdsourced "explicit" flag would be better than nothing.
