[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Just seen that this has been an inside since 2013 (and before).... so I guess Spotify will never add this functionality which really means they don't care what their customers want or need.

I was just going I sign up as I'm hosting a party in a couple of weeks but will need to go with another provider. Cya

The problem is not a technical issue but rather by policy not to allow you to avoid explicit content. I've Uninstalled Spotify and moved to Google Play. I've never been happier. Better selection too.

Ridiculous this isn't on this app. imho, spotify is doing music streaming better than anyone else, except for this one stupid detail. Going back to google play until this feature exists. Pathetic

I can't believe this is not an option!  We just started our free family trial a few days ago - cranked up a playlist yesterday to power through cleaning the house with the kids, but unfortunately two songs in, a VERY explicit song came on.  Then two songs later another one.  We turned it off and went to Padora.  I was just coming on to figure out how to disable the explicit songs - it never ocurred to me that it wasn't an option!  And it's not just for the kids - if we have company over, or my mom, of just don't feel like hearing explicit lyrics, Spotify just isn't an option.  I guess we'll just be letting our trial expire...  I'm glad we discovered this before we formally subscribed. Too bad - such a good service otherwise...

Reposting the below:

Seth Farbman, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), can be reached via email also at seth@spotify.com.

Also  https://www.facebook.com/sethfarbman

He was formerly at the Gap until 2015 so he should understand how public opinion can be an important thing to pay attention to.

Spotify does not care about their customers, that much is for sure.  No meaningful response to something so many have asked for and is so easy for them.   Spotify also makes it nearly impossible to contact a real person.  So many violations of Marketing 101.

Page from another concerned user:  https://www.facebook.com/MakeSpotifyChildSafe/

The new Amazon music service of course already has this feature, as does everyone else.  I'm directing my dollars that way.

With the cavalier attitude Spotify exhibits about their customers I would not be surprised to see it not be a major player in the future.

Just emailed Seth using the email above. Hope it works!

I would like to hold you up to the highest regard. So many people have
emailed with "Please Spotify fix this issue." The best way is to simply
move on to something else. Pandora is great. I am using Google play and love
it. In a few years I might check back with Spotify, but not likely. Well
done!

What's the point in Sportify knowing that some songs are explicit but not allowing you to do anything about it?  I know you can choose a playlist that's for kids, but surely a basic parental lock, kids accounts, a simple toggle switch for adult accounts that want to tone down the language for a minute (as has been said, if you have guests over or are playing music to a public or office environment).

Why have such a good repository of data if you can't do anything with it, can you imagine having a rich database of artist genre and then not being able select to play/filter by genre or artist.  What's the point of having the data in the system when no feature exists to use it?

The fact that the warning text pops up next to the song in a list doesnt change the fact it starts to play out in the first place, this is an app predominantly for playlists and suggestions not choosing every song manually and being able to individually vet songs.

Such a cheap bit of logic to implement, IF explicitFilter=enabled AND currentSong.explicit=true THEN play.next.  Oh and add a toggle switch to the UI, or even just hidden in the settings screen.

Come on, don't just take the money and run, keep putting in things your app is missing.  Parental controls are a must for such a massive app (won't SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDEREN, and even "LET'S CHANGE AMERICA" as someone else put it somehow....).

A toggle switch for adult users who want to play music without risk of profanity for a period, would be so easy to implement too.

I am now unsubscribing to this Dead Idea (which is posted wrongly on their Live Idea?) that has filled up my inbox for almost 2 years hoping one day it will have a positive development but all I get are the same feedback over and over. I've subscribed to Apple Music for almost half a year now and enjoying it so far without having to keep watch of unwanted explicit songs popping up. 😉

Philgin,

Does turning off explicit content in Apple Music remove the songs or swap them for their Radio Edit?
