[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I think I'm only allowed to click the "vote" button if I had a premium account (which makes sense :-). So I'll add my vote here that I agree with all the comments above and also add that sometimes, an explicit lyrics filter would be nice for myself as well.

Oh cool, it allowed me to vote once I registered my username and submitted a comment.

I'd also like to write a thought to the song writers and artists that I have really enjoyed how Spotify brings all your music together and how the tools are great for sharing with my kids and friends and co-workers. Especially when it comes to my kids: I want them to enjoy good music and just need to be able to curb certain topics and words where possible as they come to understand context and nuance as they mature. There's an added endorsement and permission granted (the inch) when a parent hit's the play button. And just like I would take this inch a mile when I was young, I'm sure my kids will as well. So it would be nice to have this added control so I wouldn't have to manually listen for and skip the songs that have lyrics and topics that I think might be a bit too soon for their individual development...3 young and wildly curios daughters. If you could meet them, you'd totally understand what I mean. They need great music to set them free but they also need a bit of protection so they can stay young as long as possible. Wouldn't you want a parent that cared enough to do that?

Hi there,

Also why is this shown as solved?  They've not solved anything?  Other than to say 'no you can't do it'?

Childeren are our future, teach them right and let them guide/light/something the way!

Everything has filters these days, the wider world is not suitable for minors, how can you give a kid a laptop with the internet and say 'knock yourself out' or 'here's a gun, now play nice have fun'.

Kind regards,

Oscar

Well this thread is just going on and on.. So many of us demanding an explicit fliter button and four years in Spotify refuse to act.. As someone else has already pointed out, they (Spotify) consider this post/thread "live idea" as "solved" when it soooo clearly isn't. Just thought I'd check back in and update my actions on this. I am currently trialling Google Play Music on a 30 day trial and early days yet but so far so good. It has it's minor points e.g. I can't control the "app" which is actually just their Chrome web browser from my phone and the interface does take a bit of learning BUT the biggy for us is that they DO have a block explicit songs slider/button option. This only works on their "radio" playlists and not on albums themselves if they feature songs with "E" lyrics in them but it's a darn fine start. Point is we can happily jump into any of their assembled playlists and let them run without eff's and mother f* et al causing upset. Great work Google. If all continues well I will be cancelling my subscription to Spotify within the next 30 days.. They can't say I didn't try or warn them!

As a Premium and Family plan users with My Spotify account on many devices as well as Sonus around the house and having 2 kids, i feel that I have no option but to move to another service as having playlists running and having F Bombs being dropped is not great! Its been Good Spotify but time to move on..... unless you fix this really easy ask?

Hi Andy,
I had no reply from Spotify on this issue so I emailed them directly two days ago. There initial response was "that's an interesting idea, why don't you post it to the ideas board and see if other users are also interested in this". I pointed out that this idea has been on the ideas board since at least 2012, with one post alone having over 6000 likes.

It seems to me that Spotify have no intention of addressing this issue and so I will be changing service.

Idea was provided more than four years ago and there hasn't been one single solid update from Spotify. Listen I totally get it, there may be challenges in adopting certain changes, but then tell us what some of those challanges are, show us that you actually care about your community, the ideas provided, that you're actually trying. Transparency goes a very long way now a days.

After seeing this thead, I submitted an idea on this subject matter which would be a tiny step, but in the right direction. Would appreciate the support from anyone that feels the same

I too contacted their support@spotify.com and got the "We don't censor music" statement. I stated I'd already seen that and re-explained the request. Was told it was their Content Team that made those deciscions so support staff didn't know. Asked if they could perhaps ask the Content Team (really, it's not rocket science). Basicly got told to keep monitory the community board and Spotify would notify us of any change as they reallly want feedback from their customers. Suggest rather than adding to this ongoing thread you all email support with your query, don't accept the first fob off, push for a solid answer if you can. I'm also going to contact Sonos as a partner who may be interested (or may not).

I've already emailed ceo@sonos.com to complain that their integration with Spotify makes using their software unacceptable in my household, because of all the reason we've listed previously. No reply yet!
