[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Spotify have failed in their duty of care to children (13 year olds are children)!

I honestly hate listening to swear words in music and I would love to have this option!

It would be great to have this as a feature. Love listing to the charts at work but unfortunately it's too risky with the amount of explicit content on the charts at the moment.

Thanks for your support. This afternoon I had an online chat session with Issa B which went like this:

Hey there! Thanks for contacting Spotify Support. You're chatting with Issa B.

NOTE: So we don't get disconnected, please do not navigate away to another browser or app during this chat.

There is an active conversation in the Community regarding having an option to filter out explicit-content music. It appears that the matter has been "live" for over 5 years and there has been nearly 9000 likes. This is not an issue of censorship...the artists and musicians can say whatever they like....this is an issue of managing the content to which our children and possibly our work colleagues or customers are exposed. You offer a "family" membership for a price, but you don't offer me the option to protect my children from hearing obscene or explicit content. That is ridiculous. The conversation in the Community is active, Spotify is seen as being inactive and disinterested...and you are not the only streaming service. Please can you explain why this matter receives no attention, or if it is receiving attention then please can you broadly distribute an update on the progress you have made and when we can expect a solution. I assure you, you won't get a red cent out me until I know I can filter explicit content and protect my young children. Thanks for your consideration.

Thanks for your patience as I read over your question for a moment...

I understand your concern about explicit music. I'm here to explain.

First, I want to apologize if you (and other customers) are not happy with explicit music. I also have a kid so I understand where you're coming from.

You are also correct that we've already encountered this feedback many times. However, we make music available in whatever form it’s given to us by artists and labels. They’ll often provide an “explicit” and “clean” version of an album. If both versions are available, you can find them under More Releases, located below the final track of the album page.

But, on the part about filtering music, I can try to report it for you now. However, I cannot guarantee anything as we need to consider a lot of things before releasing a certain feature.

I understand your first comment, but it is what we call here "a cop out". That's not really good enough...we can be playing a random playlist in the car and we are not able to filter for explicit content

And as for trying to report it....look at the community pages on "Explicit button"....there's nearly 9000 comments and Spotify last acknowledged it in November 2016

Many of the comments are not positive about Spotify...it's kind of embarrassing for your company

That is actually a good feedback. Since we are tagging explicit music, I can report to have a filtering feature. But, as mentioned, there will be no guarantee as there's a lot of things to consider.

I can assure you though that this will be raised now.

We all understand what you say about providing the music in whatever form it is provided...and let me reiterate that this is not about censoring the artist...it is about child protection.

My kids will learn those words soon enough...they don't need to hear it at age 6 in a car

I understand. As mentioned above, the best thing that I can do for now is to report it right away. I'm actually done with it, and here's the reference number: 4295376921.

Thank you for raising it....PLEASE make sure that the responses are put up in the Community page

Brought this up on their Twitter page today and was referred back to this to add a vote. Seems @SpotifyCares don't really care on community requests as long as the nearly 9000 voters are still paying money!!

I'm really upset with the lack of filter. I love music, and personally I don't want to hear the f-bomb drop ever. I don't want to be introduced to explicit music at all, so even if the feature turned off popular songs that are explicit I could care less. However I am about to switch to apple music, and that pains me, because I have loved and been loyal to Spotify. But at this point it feels like they are holding it over our heads like no, we don't want to, not the no we can't. You can find my favorite songs and create daily mixes but you can't filter out the ones that are explicit? Yeah I don't buy that. I'm going to wait until the end of my apple trail and make a decision then, but sadly Spotify I'm leaning towards leaving.

The fact that they already identify music with explicit lyrics makes me
wonder WHY it is taking so long to action a filter.

I contacted customer service again; and there are still no plans.  I love the selections from Spotify and have a great music libary (which I pay monthly for), but I am going to have to make a hard decision and find another venue (Pandora, Apple, Sirius) to see if I can actually listen to the music I want to without having to worrying about inappropriate words at my workplace.

I was out on the boat this weekend with kids everywhere and I was listening to 2 Live Crew, WOW was I embarresed. Why have you not come up with a way to turn off or skip explicit content. I subscrib each month, but I will be going back to Pandora soon because of this. 8/1/2017
