[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Updated on 2018-12-06

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

No recent news because they don't care about this issue.  The only solution is to not use Spotify.

Cancel you subscription and let them know why.

It is amazing how many tracks these days have explicit lyrics. It is great that Spotify tags them, but there absolutely should be a button in the user's profile to allow them to disable them from playing. It is very disturbing (and pretty irresponsible) that Spotify does not consider this an important parental option when they are specifically targeting families with their product.

I've been using the family plan on Google Play Music for the last few years because of this inability to block explicit songs. Occasionally check back on this post to be puzzled / disappointed at why Spotify don't care about the loss of revenue from such a basic feature. They are clearly never going to implement this feature for some reason only know to them.

They used the word "impossible" in their communication with me. Connecting that word with their lack of action leads me to suspect that to implement such filtering they would perhaps be breaching the terms of their agreement with the artists (perhaps it is a "Spotify must give equal precedent to" type clause). Notwithstanding this, Spotify needs to work very hard to fix this. As you say, jook3d, this hurts their revenue and helps their competitors, neither of which is at all good in the long term for Spotify.

This was Spotify's answer to my direct request to customer service. Good
news, indeed (NOT):

"Hi,

Thanks for getting in touch. We understand that you want to have more
control with your listening preferences, and exclude those with explicit
lyrics. No worries, we're here to explain.

Spotify does not censor music. We make it available in whatever form it’s
given to us.

Sometimes multiple versions of an album are released, often because there’s
an explicit and clean version available. Only one will be immediately
visible.

Good news! It’s possible to check for additional releases of an album via
the desktop app.

How to check for more releases

1. On the Album page, scroll down to the bottom of the track listings.
2. Click the *MORE RELEASES* button in the bottom-right.
3. Choose the version of the album you're after.

*Note: If you don’t see the MORE RELEASES BUTTON then there are no other
versions of the album currently available on Spotify. *

We hope this helps. If you're still having any trouble at all, feel free to
reply and let us know.

All the best,

Spotify Customer Support"

Yes...it's just a complete waste of time. They continue to confuse censorship with personal choice. Their Ts & Cs state that they will not tolerate inappropiate language, posts, porn etc, and yet they continue to deny us the right to protect our children from inappropriate language in songs.
I actually don't use Spotify at all...I don't pay money for products I don't like. They should be ashamed but they don't care.
Bye Spotify!

No not really as this doesn’t stop my 3 year old using Alexa and miss pronouncing a song name. We always supervise him while he does this. But it doesn’t help when a song starts rapping swear words after swear words from the get go also not helping the radio feature either!!! He is getting very good at singing along to songs, i do not want him singing songs with "**bleep**" **bleep**" and "**bleep**" with his friends!! (Like to see if spotify censor my comment and not implement a simple "skip songs" Also sorry to anyone who is offended, just proving a point!!)

Well, I remain quite hopeful that they are listening and support this feature. It just seems so clear that this is needed (for them and for us), and they have stated publicly that they think it is a good idea.

I can't see how artists would have a problem with people skipping some of their songs due to explicit lyrics. This can already be done manually anyway. The Explicit switch would just filter out those songs from any playlist or album for people who don't want to hear them. What's the harm?

People have already created plugins that can copy and filter playlists to remove the explicit lyrics so lets just get it onto the main app.

Please 🙂

Why is this still not implemented? It's been five years of users asking for this feature! It's a common feature of most other music streaming sites. I just want to be able to listen to spotify at work (headphones aren't an option), without worrying about curse words.
