[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

It’s been over a year since the response from Spotify staff. Spotify, how about a realistic answer to this. You may get more subscribers. What a nice thought.

This is a great idea! I would even go as far as to say it is grossly irresponsible of Spotify to not have enabled this already! The fact that most requests for anything to do with filtering explicit material have currently been stalled or denied seems to be an indicator that this is an issue which Spotify doesn't care about!

Thinking of switching to Pandora, which HAS this feature.

SlimeyUnicorn, I switched to Apple Music because Pandora is not available
in my country (Portugal). My kids - after the initial resistance - are
saying that Apple Music works great. My oldest son (18 years old) told me
that building playlists is fun and he seemed content. I still think Spotify
is a superior product, but Apple music works fine. I would go back to
Spotify if they implemented explicit content filtering; I'm now convinced
they never will.

Why call if Family if not family friendly?

There's already a backlash against big tech going on and you don't want to get caught up in lack of corporate social responsibility that has set Uber back years...  Only a matter of time before the mainstream media get on your back about this one, so why not be front footed?  You thought this was a good idea in November 2016.

But they are afraid that they might loos the respect of trash mouth JayZ.

Always comes back to money doesn’t it?
Bhamnew
No, Jay-Z owns Tidal. So it’s goes back to greed.

This update is over a year old. Surely something has happened with this in a year. This is obviously not a technically difficult thing to implement, rather there must be something in the commercial side of the business that makes this difficult. It feels very disingenuous for Spotify (and Amazon as well) to continue to ignore something that so many users are asking for. Since The Google and Apple products and the Apple and Pandora music services all offer this functionality it appears that the market may be the only way to convince Amazon and Spotify that this is important. I, for one, don’t have the patience for that and will vote with my dollars. Losing subscribers while letting them know why you’re leaving is likely the only way to make the commercial impediment (whatever it is) important enough to, at least, be honest with the community.
