[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I got the above response within 24 hours. You can imagine what responses we would get (hopefully with more information and less delay tactics) if we all tweet to them. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, let's all use social media to voice our concerns.

Seems simple enough as Spotify already have data on which songs are explicit. Must have feature for those with kids.

I contacted @SpotifyCares as suggested and received the expected response...

My tweet: "It's been over THREE years! Where's the Explicit filtering option? bit.ly/spotifyplz #spotifynsfw #switchtopandora"

@SpotifyCares response: "We don't have any more news on this yet, but we'll post on that thread as soon as we do /CG"

My response: "It's been over three years. I'm not going to hold my breath. #switchingtopandora #spotifynsfw #damntheusers"

Featured Playlist on Spotify... Sounds innocent enough... but wait, there is an explicit track (actually marked as explicit) THIS is the REASON for needing the explicit button. The Song repeatedly uses the G** D**N explicit. Spoify NEEDS to fix this bug.

+1000 from me on this one. I'm more and more anoyed with "songs" where the english language has deteriorated to a low level of disgrace towards the sexual act and a total lack of respect for the female gender.

I received more correspondence from @SpotifyCares. Here's the full conversation:

  • My tweet on March 11th: "It's been over THREE years! Where's the Explicit filtering option? bit.ly/spotifyplz #spotifynsfw #switchtopandora"
  • @SpotifyCares response on March 12th: "We don't have any more news on this yet, but we'll post on that thread as soon as we do /CG"
  • My response on March 12th: "It's been over three years. I'm not going to hold my breath. #switchingtopandora #spotifynsfw #damntheusers"
  • @SpotifyCares response on March 23th: "Our tech folks take into account the amount of Kudos and popularity of an idea to make it happen /CG"
  • My response on March 13th: "2,500 "kudos" and 760 comments (100 in the last 3 months alone) isn't enough to get your attention? #spotifynsfw"

As others have pointed out in this thread, this is not technical wizardy we're asking for. They already flag Explicit songs, so they simply need to add a preference that says, "Is the next song flagged Explicit? If the skip Explicit preference is set to Yes don't play it." Trying to tell me this isn't a popular idea is just silly. The amount of noise it has generated here, and I'd image on Twitter/Facebook/elsewhere should have gotten their attention long ago.

What Spotify doesn't seem to get is the negative impact of not doing anything. Maybe there are some other requests that people would like - items that have more kudos - but how many of those things make people mad and get them talking about switching service if they do not get them, as so many people on this thread have? Spotify should not simply be looking at what people say "yes" to but also what they say "Hell No!" to. For many people this is a requirment to use the service and for others (myself included) it is a real problem. The more this thread goes on the more I think no one at Spotify cares about their customers in the least, which sucks.

This is really important for our family and we may choose to go with a different music provider should Spotify delay too much longer.

I tried the premium service and was all ready to sign up...until I couldn't find the explicit button.  I'd be more than happy to sign up if this happens.  Until then...I'll bounce back and forth between services depending on who is around.
