Close Button Closes Spotify [Windows]

Or at least minimize it to a tray Icon. But I would say close it. Maybe this is more of an opinion, but I've only used 2 programs that are this bad. Skype and Spotify. And Skype is a really bad program.  So I don't know why in Spotify, the Close and Minimize button do the same exact thing. I would like a quick way to close the program and stop the musik.  This is mainly a problem for me on Windows 7 and I believe linux is very similar.

Hey everyone. This feature was implemented for Windows users in our latest update (1.0). You can read more about this update here. Thanks for your kudos and feedback here in the Idea Exchange.

It's been almost a year since Spotify announced it would end it's P2P network using customer computers. Uninstalling. There are plenty of good options out there.

This seems to have changed in version 1.0.1.x

... X now closes Spotify on my windows 7 system.

Bummer- I just canceled last week...

OK, enough is enough. I'm voting with my feet and I'll cancel right now Spotify, but I'm sure you will ignore the bang of the door closing behind me (as you have ignored our request to coply with the expected and STANDARD functionality). Really people, what's so hard in NOT modifying the standard functionality?

I am not sure where you got that version. The latest version, according to the release notes, is version 0.9.13

The version showing on my computer (just installed this morning) is 0.9.15.g87efe634, and the X button still doesn't close the application.

Are you running a beta version?

Now that the latest version (1.0.1) closes the app when the 'X' is clicked, there are many more complaints about the app not working like standard. Everyone giving kudos to this post are among a minority who want something no one else does.

This is a quote from something I posted in this same thread a long time ago:

This method of operation has been part of the standard UI guidelines for Windows Apps since Microsoft introduced the Jump List feature with Windows 7.

Even before that, apps still minimized to the system tray in WinXP when you clicked the close button (Winamp, Last.fm and basically every other app that runs in the background for example).

It's not really that hard to right click the taskbar icon or the system tray icon and choose 'Quit Spotify'.

Skype does the same thing. If you click the close button and the app minimizes. Either right click the taskbar icon or the system tray icon and choose 'Quit Skype'.

Steam does the same thing. If you click the close button and the app minimizes to the system tray. Either right click the taskbar icon or the system tray icon and choose 'Exit Steam'.

Here is a list of topics created in the last 2 days with posts from users who hate this 'new' functionality:

Personally, I can't believe that Spotify are catering to such a small minority of users who can't get their head around current Windows app development standards.

It would be nice to add a "Minimize to Tray"-option when I click the Close-Button.

@lachie_h

You have a valid point. There are definitely people who want the application to minimize to the task tray instead of close when they click the close icon, and there are indeed other applications that use this same functionality.

However, in response to your "something no one else does" and "current Windows app development standards" comments, I would ask you to please keep in mind that the standard functionality of all Windows programs is to close when the X icon is clicked. It is a design guideline of the OS, and for every application you cited that ignores this paradigm, there are a thousand others that follow it.

There are valid reasons for both preferences, and I am not arguing that the application should have to be one way or the other, but  why not simply have a checkbox that allows you to do either? That way both parties are happy. This is not something that Spotify would have to engineer from scratch. There are other programs out there that have already figured it out, and have this option (uTorrent comes to mind, off the top of my head). Even if it was not the default behavior, I think most people in this thread would be satisfied if it were simply added as an option.

There are very few programs that have the needs of an application like spotify in that most applications, on closing of the last window, do not need to remain running.

Under Microsoft's own guidelines for Taskbar and Notification Tray, applications that have a desktop presence should remain in the Taskbar while running. They also go on to say not to provide commands for opening and closing a programs as they are built into all Jump Lists. They don't specifically mention exiting a program, but I guess that can be taken both ways.

Keeping in mind that Skype is a Microsoft application, it would be logical to follow the precedent that they set for their own operating system and applications.

Ultimately, I agree with you. The option to select how the application behaves should be up to the user. Ideally it should have these options:

Close Button Behaviour:
( x ) Minimize to Task Bar
(    ) Exit Program
(    ) Minimize to System Tray (Hide Taskbar Icon)

Just to point out to everyone that you can already minimize Spotify to the Notification Area. The application will remain running in the background, but it won't show on the Taskbar.

Right click on the system tray icon and check the 'Hide from Taskbar when closed' option. Then close spotify and it will minimize to the notification area.
