[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

The message feature was one of my favorite ideas about Spotify, I loved sharing songs with my friends and talking about them. That is what makes Spotify a social place.

Yeah this is not ok. I will be shopping for an alternative now and I will be doing what I can to bring my friends over to it if this is not resolved quickly. Like many others, inbox and messaging were crucial features for me. I have been a premium subscriber for several years but I will cancel over this.

My 24-year old daughter is a Premium member of Spotify.  I am not. We have both been using Spotify for years.  We have a longstanding music search and sharing tradition, having similar tastes in music and a very strong deisre to find new, bold and meaningful artists and songs.

Sharing directly to other users, rather than sharing to followers, some of whome might have significantly different tastes in music than the one wioth whom I wan to share a song, an album or an artist, has been a cornerstone of my Spotify use.  It is fundamental to the appeal and utility of Spotify.

That appeal is gone.  I cannot conceive of a user-centric (Spotiify IS commited to a user-centric business model...isn't it?) rationale for eliminating this feature.

Help us understand.  Listen to the feedback.  Restore the feature if you can't rationalize it from more than a growth and profitability standpoint.

Thanks for your consideration. Otherwise a devoted and happy Spotify user,

Mike

Please add it back! So many lost opportunities to specifically share with friends the music that makes me think of them. It loses its personability and especially on desktop its difficult to send specific tracks to people when you don't want other social media getting involved. This feature was AMAZING, bring back the messages ❤️

I do not have social media (Facebook, instagram, Twitter) now Spotify's ONLY way to share songs.  I have ZERO desire to get a social media account and find it offensive the feature was REMOVED to send a song to one person privately.

Will unsubscribe.  Please stop REMOVING FEATURES.

For a lot of people, this is purely convience - they don't want to want to share their music another way, and that's cool. I empathize with their sentiment.

For me it's personal. I spent the last 3 years of my life getting to know someone I eventually fell in love with through the Spotify Inbox. We shared many memories, laughs, moods, and emotions though music and specifically by being able to send messages back and forth. Spotify Inbox helped us form this love language that was unique to us. I was looking the other day and was very sadded to find this feature was removed with no warning.

I get it. I build software too and have to make similar tough calls. However, you blind sided your users. We spent time creating a unique repository of information. Give us a chance to view our archived messages and get our information out. Let us grab our songs at least or expose them in some way (songs only) where they are pubically accessible, so we can make a playlist out of them at a minimum.

I think a lot of people would appreciate you putting all the songs shared between people in a playlist. It would mean the world to me.

I completely agree! Sharing music with friends/family is a great feature. Why do we have to use other platforms to share music while we are already engaged in Spotify.

It is very upsetting to hear that message box is gone now, it would be a shame if Spotify removed this feature permanently since it will have a big negative impact on the amount of music shared !

I can only assume the decision to remove this feature began with a meeting that started like this:

"Let's come up with a reason for people to cancel their subscriptions!"

I've tried most of the streaming services and this feature is what kept me on Spotify.  That's all I have to say.

It's hard to believe that supporting the sharing feature was so expensive that it warranted killing.  It was a pretty important feature in my book.  I'm displeased.  You wouldn't like me when I'm displeased.  My frowny face is very unpleasant to behold.

Extremely disappointed to see the inbox feature disappear... This is really the only time I've ever really thought about just canceling the membership. There were years of songs shared between friends in our inboxes. I don't want to post music to followers. I don't want to use Facebook to send music when there was already a system that worked. I just want to send music to my friends.

All we needed was notifications for new inbox items and instead we got the whole thing taken away. I really hope the inbox comes back
