[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

I would like to add to the plethora of comments addressing the recent discontinuation of the messaging feature. Let me be clear. I still love spotify and it is still my number one music app. I have the family plan because my wife and I use it literally all the time. But I also have friends who thoroughly enjoy sharing music. We used the messaging service ALL the time. We've created playlists based solely off the messaging service as it's a great way for us to share new music with each other which we may not otherwise get an opportunity to hear. I just don't even understand why it was discontinued in the first place. Was this not a popular feature among other users? And along those line I don't seem to recall even a notification that it was going away. I just throught my account had a glitch in it for the longest time. I truly hope you reconsider this decision and reverse it promptly. Thank You!

Bring it back! I just went into my Spotify account, listened to a song, and immediately tried to send it to a friend. Obviously that did not happen. Private messaging was my number one way of sharing music with others and there are at least 3 or 4 of my friends whom I shared music with consistently. Why Spotify stopped posting notifications for new messages makes no sense to me.

I agree with @mfgioia. I receive plenty of concert notifcations via my email, which is connected to my account. However, I received no notification that privage messaging was to be removed, even if temporarily. I am happy to recommend Spotify to others and have been doing so since 2012 but this just sucks.

My friends and I would share music with eachother all the time via this feature. Unfortunate that it was removed. One of the best parts of a platform like this is it's ability to diversivy your music tastes, and as a dirty hipster, finding new dope songs then sharing them for bragging rights with your mates was a great feeling.

And what about the UX for sharing songs now? The flow is basically: copy song link -> go to a messaging platform -> send link -> go back to spotify. Not only is that clumsy and makes me feel bad inside, but our context has completelly changed from talking about new music, to a conversation diluted with a **bleep**-load of other things.

It would be really nice to see this feature come back.

Spotify is trying to push you share songs publicly instead of sharing them privately.

This is a foolish change to push spotify users to use spotify more like as a social app.

I am sorry but this will make us to share songs in OTHER SOCIAL APPS instead of changing our behaviour, from private sharing to public sharing.

Your sociologists are wrong.

Bring it back!! It's so smooth to just send a song to a friend as a private message and not having to share it with everyone from my grandmother to co-workers from fifteen years ago. They don't need to know my guilty pleasure is Luther Vandross...

What's the next bright idea Spotify? Getting rid off the play button?

When Spotify was first launched it had really great stuff in it, which they discarded throughout the years one by one. The recommendation engine of Spotify is best there ever is - the Discover Weekly and Daily Mixes a very creative and interesting add-ons - but can't we have them together with notifications and messages? I understand that Spotify does not want to be associated as a social media app, that's fine. But I would also like to get to discover new music through other users with similar tastes, not just via machine learning algorithms.

Being able to share music with friends was probably the best single feature of Spotify, it already suffered a serious blow when the drag and drop feature disappeared but removing it completely is extremely annoying, what would you do that? What is differentiating Spotify from the competition now?

I don't know why Spotify removed this option. Please return it - I exclusively share music to individuals only and do not post on social media about it. Also I get tired of them moving the inbox around the interface and having to look for it every time they create an update.

Please bring this back! at the least, compile our Inbox in to a playlist. My history of inbox songs has great value to me.

The problem with the inbox feature was lack of notifications... but it was still one of my favorite ways to communicate digitally.
