[All Platforms] Configure Autoplay setting when opening Spotify Links

On Mobile, clicking a Spotify link to a song opens the Spotify app, immediately plays the song and also sets the song/album to be pulled from next. It would be nice if this interaction with links could be configurable to just open the Song page to allow the user to either add to queue or playlist without interrupting their current session. This is the default behavior on Web/Desktop players.

WHY IS THIS STILL A THING??? So many people have complained about this on your forums in the past few years...

Most of them unhappy because they'll be listening to something, get a link from a friend, open just to look out of curiosity and instead get completely derailed away from the music they were already enjoying by something they didn't even know anything about or know it would play.

It's EXTREMELY annoying.

My biggest problem with it is different, and i'm sure there's many other reasons to want it off.

I hate that this autoplay feature makes it so i can't make good use of the Now Playing feature on my phone because Spotify won't let me simply open the song to SAVE IT. I DON'T WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SAME SONG ASYMMETRICALLY OVERLAPPED FROM TWO DIFFERENT SOUND SOURCES!!

Sorry for the frustration, but really... It should be optional. It should be able to be turned off.

Community members, if you'd rather have some kind of solution to this than nothing at all, please vote!

Problem:

Clicking Spotify links automatically plays the song, even when you are already listening to something else. This disrupts an otherwise seamless listening experience, loses place in a currently playing playlist, and derails listening to another album or playlist.

Minimal Solution:

Always add to top of the queue. If nothing is playing, then play next.

By taking advantage of already existing queue behavior, this solves the problems identified above, although not in exactly the way that has been requested before.

Power Solution:
Give users a setting to decide how the app handles opened links.

Default Action for Opened Links

☑️ Always 🔲 Only When Listening

  • Play Next
  • Add to End of Queue
  • Play Immediately (Current annoying behavior)
  • Add to Playlist
    • Choose a Default playlist or "Ask Me".

This option gives everyone who has brought up this issue a solution that satisfies what they've requested.

This is not a new idea, but has been raised many times over the years, described in different ways that make it look like different issues:

Make the opening shared links not destroy the current queue

Turn off Autoplay from Link
Stop auto play when opening a linked song

Stop songs from starting automatically when opening a link

Stop links from automatically playing

Tapping a song does not change the queue

Shared Song Add to Queue - Check if Playback is On

Option to Add to Queue or Play When Opening Shared Links

Link to queue

Hey I agree this needs to finally be fixed. I've put together a master post that brings everyone with the same general issue together. Hopefully this will finally get attention from Spotify.

Stop interrupting current listening when we open Spotify links

Thank you!

I am frequently listening to music and it is extremely frustrating that when clicking Spotify links they automatically play and mess up what I was already listening to. It would be great to have settings to turn this feature off. I just want the link to take me to the song, not start playing it automatically. Please implement this change!

coobz

Please make this feature happen!

It's happening to me, but not always, this is the most frustrating behavior

I hope they will fix it..

They should at least ask upon opening what we wish to do with the opened song instead of just clearing our play queue....

whenever I click a link to a spotify song on my iphone, it will play the song immediately. I would prefer that it just displays the song and then I can decide if I want to have it play or for example I could put it in my listening queue, so I don't lose the flow in the playlist or the album that I am listening to.

Currently, when clicking a shared song link, the app overrides whatever you are currently listening to (autoplay).  This feature might be good if the user clicking the link is not already listening to anything.

However, if someone is already listening, the feature becomes more of a nuisance.

I suggest a check before autoplaying; if the user is already listening to something, display the song instead of autoplaying (allowing them to queue it).

This feature would immensely improve song sharing between friends.

If you have auto play on  - have auto loop not automatically turned on. I want to hear new music but hate that if i have auto play on auto loop automatically is turned on!
