[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Given up. Lame. This is an easy one. By "giving up", I'm not saying I've
given up on Spotify, but I've given up on them doing something about it.
Really they are the ones who lose. I just won't trust any kind of discovery
mode with Spotify with my kids around, which is most of the time, so they
lose air time.

Just what is it that Spotify want kids to discover?

Hi All

Having written to support@spotify.com and posted on their twitter accounts @Spotify and @SpotifyCares a number of times, Spotify clearly do not see this as an issue, I have 90% of the time just received a standard copy and past response.

If we want to change this I recommend we all do the following, every day until we get an actual response to this issue, it is only if a number of us do this, that they will see this as an issue, as we will highlight that a number of us are not happy, and they will see the bad reports in their social feeds.

  1. I) Write to support@spotify.com example email attached.

Dear Spotify Support

I am writing to request that you look into adding an explicit filter button to Spotify, I can see there is a request that has been open on the community of live ideas now for 5 years, with over 9800 votes, but I cannot see any response to this from yourselves for almost a year.

Can you please add this feature as soon as posible, as playing in a household with children I do not wish expose them to explicit lyrics, and this is a choice I want to have.  Under the Spotify app and website we can see you mark when songs have explicit lyrics, so it doesn’t seem then too hard to add a filter to say skip these songs,  but currently YOU are making the decision of what is right for my children, and this I feel is wrong.

I would kindly ask you to update the Live Idea here - before the end of the year, with when this can be implemented.

Looking forward to your response.

.......

  1. II) Post to @__spo__ and @SpotifyCares with the following tweet.

@Spotity - Please advise when we can protect our own children from explicit lyrics

#ExplicitButton #SpotifyDoesNotCare http://bit.ly/expl_btn_spot

Please

III) Share round friends / family / everyone to show them that we need this to change, it is only is Spotify see that this matters to us, will it matter to them.

Hope this creates the change we all want.

Best wishes

Mark

I was just looking around on the internet about this. It was already written and rejected in 2013 :

Also as a hack for jailbroken IOS:

I am guessing this is down to commercial / chart reasons or similar?

Or possibly they have the YouTube problem that not every explicit song is tagged and so the filter may be imperfect.

Also while the definition of child friendly will be pretty variable, a straight Explicit only lock would be sufficient as that is an understood industry usage.

There are several "safe" playlists on spotify designed just for kids described as clean poplists suitable for children etc. The first two of these lists I looked at before letting my kids use them ( thats right spotify I dont trust you) contain E tracks WITH NO WAY TO DELETE. Is it out of control when spotify attempt to provide, or allow others to provide what they consider to be "safe" playlists and still fail? And is not that already a form of dreaded censorship? If spotify can't do it why not provide a tool to allow those that care a little more to protect their children?

There's a family subscription waiting for you... all you need to do is implement this feature...

closhea1

I can't believe there still isn't this feature. I will change to a new service if this isn't resolved soon. My children do not need to hear that language all the time.

Spotify/Can you fix it?
