[Mobile] [Other] Smart Shuffle toggle setting in settings menu

Smart shuffle is a fun way to discover new songs, but it comes at a cost. Want to reshuffle your queue? Bam, wait a few seconds longer. Want to unshuffle your playlist? Bam, no longer works, and goes to a completely random place in the playlist.

To me this is an unwanted complication, and I'd much rather be able to choose in the settings menu whether I want to enable the Smart Shuffle feature, or disable it.

Updated on 2025-04-29

Hey folks,

We're excited to announce that you can now toggle whether Smart Shuffle is available on your mobile apps!

  1. Tap your profile picture at the top.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Select Playback.
  4. Switch Enable all play modes off and you're good to go!

Cheers & many thanks for your input 🙂 Stay tuned for new updates 🙌🏼

Please let us be able to turn smart shuffle or make it a different button entirely from shuffle.

I don't mind them adding new improvements, but to me it feels like Smart Shuffle is attempted pushed on you. When I want to play my playlists, I have carefully selected songs. When I want to play shuffle, I don't want Smart Shuffle to be activated automatically. The worst part with Smart Shuffle is that even if you disable it once and go back into the song to check that it's disabled, it's enabled again. Yes, it doesn't take much time but why make things more annoying?

Make 'smart shuffle' its own button or toggle, or let us disable the feature entirely in the settings menu. It's frustrating having to toggle past smart shuffle to get to regular shuffle every time, especially as there is a slight delay where it has to pre-load the suggested music.

I also have no idea why smart shuffle takes priority over regular shuffle in the order. Surely more users prefer to use regular shuffle, which means we're being given an extra click for no reason. Good UI design is partially about getting from A to B in as fewer steps as possible.

Please fix this.

SmartShuffle was a solution in search of a problem - which there was none.

When I want to listen to my playlist, I want to listen to MY PLAYLIST, ... not random stuff interjected into it.

If I want to listen to random stuff related to my music (which I do occasionally), then I use the "Go to [Song] Radio" or "Go to [Artist] Radio" features, which work great!

SmartShuffle was not needed at all.

Alternative idea: Rename it to "Dumb Shuffle"

Such a terrible feature to make the default.

So much of the underlying AI and ML is broken.

Great example I just noticed, "My Favourite Artists" list doesn't include the band I listen to literally EVERY day, but does include some random artist I listened to a couple of weeks ago, even though I didn't even get through a whole track.

This feature is among the Spotify features that are steering the company down the path of evil. I wish I could say the "don't be evil" days of tech were still alive. Where are those idealistic coders and visionaries? Who wanted to innovate and make the world a better place. Right now they are using their powers for the wrong forces.

I came on here to leave a post and thankfully see I’m not alone. The smart shuffle feature drives me mad. Why implement something that would interrupt the user’s experience like that. Get rid!!!!

Beside disabling this feature I would also suggest to fire a UX genius(es) who keeps ruining the app in the recent years.

Specifically:

  • Making it's impossible to go to the current song in the playlist (click on the album art doesn't do this anymore; and there is no such option in the menu). At least I don't know any way to do it anymore.
  • Removing the 'favourite song' indicator that was widely used as a marker/flag for especially good songs and made it easy to find them in a playlist.
  • And king of them all, the smart shuffle indicator. Even if this feature was required (it is not), it is implemented in the worst possible way in terms of UI:
    • Previously: you have the icon in two states, grey -> green. Just a quick glance on it and you already know the playback mode.
    • Now: grey -> green with tiny little star in the corner -> green again but this time there is no star.
So I realise that this so called "smart" shuffle is enabled (instead of the normal shuffle I intended for) is only few minutes later, when some trash starts to play instead of my carefully selected songs.
    • And to implement it in the most toxic possible way, this "smart" shuffle is enabled BEFORE the actual good shuffle, not after it.
    • So, you changed the two-state switch icon into a three-state one but made it to trick the user by still looking like two-state because two of the three states are almost indistinguishable. You didn't introduce a new color for it (because **bleep** we can have only grey and green in our UI) and you didn't create an icon that would actually look different. And you inserted the new state right in between the previous two instead of appending it after them. I swear, whoever introduced this, just hates people.

And there are highly upvoted suggestions to fix all these issues on this forum. Yet nothing seems to happen. This specific thread about "smart" shuffle removal/setting was created 1.5 years ago and already has 90 pages of discussion.

The fact that nothing happens about it potentially hints at some product owner with Steve Jobs syndrome who is responsible for these UX decisions and doesn't care about the user feedback whatsoever. Just guessing.

Your users have been begging for a *true* shuffle instead of a shuffle algorithm for years and instead of doing that, you wasted your time on this awful piece of software that nobody wanted. I am BEGGING for a way to disable this permanently. I have to click the smart Shuffle button at least 2 times to get it to flip back to a standard shuffle and it takes approx 10 seconds each time. Nobody and I mean NOBODY asked for this feature. I don't know a single person who likes it. Please listen to your users and give us a way to disable it in settings.
