Audiobook chapters playing in disorder

Hey folks!

We received reports that the chapters of some Audiobooks are playing in disorder.
This is being looked into.

Hey folks!

This issue should now be resolved 🙂

In case anyone is still experiencing it, please follow these steps:

  1. Start a different playlist.
  2. Turn shuffle off. If shuffle was off, turn it on and then off again.
  3. Play an Audiobook.
  4. Pause its playback.
  5. Connect the phone to the car via Bluetooth.

The playback should resume automatically and the issue should get resolved for you as well.
Hope this helps!

Hi there @DrunkTaank,

Thanks for your reply in this thread and for the info provided.

Does this happen all the time with those audiobooks? Or are there times when they play in the correct order? Also, just to check, have you noticed if this happens after listening to music with Shuffle on, as another user suggested? If you're not sure, you can test it out. Play some playlist and turn Shuffle on, then play one of those audiobooks to check what happens. Do the same, but make sure you turn off Shuffle before playing the audiobook. Let us know if you notice a difference.

On another note, @Mitch221, and @katiemad321, let us know if you're still experiencing this behavior, and if so, send over the info mentioned by @AlejaR in our previous reply.

We'll be on the lookout!

As someone who is experiencing the same very frustrating issue with Spotify Audiobooks. I would explain it as follows. Note I always listen on a bluetooth headset or car speaker.

a) You start playing an audiobook by selecting play on the audiobook on a bluetooth headset. All the tracks/chapters are added to the play next queue in the correct order.

b) You stop playing and disconnect from the bluetooth headset.

c) You get into your car, the phone connects to the bluetooth car speaker. Spotify has now randomly reordered the whole play next queue and all the audiobook chapters will be played in a random order.

As someone who only plays podcasts and audiobooks, it shows it has no link to whether you have another playlist somewhere that is set to shuffle for that specific playlist.

And I can confirm with the lastest version of Spotify:

And here is an example of an audiobook I was listening to on my headphones. I had go to track/chapter 12. I had started the audiobook from the audiobooks play button and had checked that the "Next From" queue was fully populated with all track/chapters and in the correct order. I stopped listening for a few hours, then later go into my car, the car bluetooth connected, and Spotify has not only reordered the whole "Next From" queue, which was previously in the correct order but also added back previously listened to tracks/chapters too.Screenshot_20240127-135945.png

When I play an audio book, sometimes it starts off on the chapter I left off and then will suddenly switch to another chapter and will be completely out of order

Hey there folks,

Thanks for all the details you've provided us with.

We had a look into this and it seems there a new app version available. Could you try updating it by following the steps on this page?

If no updates appear, an option is to do a clean reinstall, which will ensure you're running the latest version.

Shouldn't that do the trick, please including your exact app version in your next reply, so we can investigate this further.

Keep us posted. Cheers!

Why oh why are audiobook chapters not played in order?? I've double checked that shuffle is not on and I have a premium subscription. Yet after EVERY chapter Spotify will skip to a random chapter. I've heard so many spoilers at the starts of these chapters. Each time I have to go in and manually select the correct next chapter. Very, very frustrating. This is the first audiobook I've tried listening to on Spotify (a John Grisham book that was heavily promoted on the app) and it will be the last unless this is fixed. Terrible experience so far. I've searched forums for possible solutions with no luck.

I have experienced the same problem 😞
When listening to an audio book the chapters are not played in the right order.
Here is one example where I have experiences this annoying behaviour: Der Tod bekommt heut Influencer - Ein Bayernkrimi [Sofia und die Hirschgrund-Morde, Teil 14 (Ungekür...
- When having completed playing "Kapitel 14 - ..." or "Kapitel 15 - ..." or "Kapitel 16 - ..." it continued playing "Kapitel 10 - ...".
- When having completed playing "Kapitel 19 - ..." it continues playing "Kapitel 2 - ...".
An audio book must (!) be played in the correct order! Otherwise it is useless!

I'd very much appreciate to get to know how to fix this!

Thanks in advance!

Hey folks,

Thank you to everyone that has posted in this thread.

If you're still experiencing this issue, the newest version of the app should fix it and you can make sure you're running the newest Spotify version with the steps here.

Keep us posted on how it goes and we're here should anything else come up 🙂

Thank you, do you have a precise version number we can look out for, the latest I am seeing is 8.9.10.616 which was an update from Feb 2 or 3?
