Podcast episodes start over from the beginning on Android

We’ve received reports that podcast episodes lose their listening progress and are starting over from the beginning. This is happening only on Android, when the following criteria are met:

  • the episode is started from a playlist - be it a personal one or Your Episodes;
  • the small white "Play" button on the right is used. When tapping on the episode title and using the big green "Play" button instead, the app remembers the progress and episodes continue as normal.

My Question or Issue

Hello, usually the app is losing the progress of the last heard podcast episode, so I'm listening a podcast, pause and after some hours when I return to listen the progress is on the start, it's really anoin. Does anyone with the same issue?

Leperpens

When I stop a podcast episode midway through, and come back to it later, the app just started replaying from the beginning.

This is a hugely problematic bug that needs to be fixed asap!

Hey folks,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome.

We tried to replicate this issue on our end, but the episode keeps the scroll position as usual. So to make sure we've covered all the basics and in case you haven't tried before, we'd recommend performing a clean reinstall of the app by following the steps in this article. This step is frequently ignored, but it can help in eliminating any cache that may be causing issues.

If the issue persists, would you mind checking on a different device (using your own account) to see if it makes any difference? If you don't have another one available, you can borrow one from a friend or family member to test it out.

Lastly, include in your next response the make, model, and OS version of your device, along with the Spotify version you're currently running to continue investigating the case.

We'll be on the lookout.

I am getting this issue now on Android

Thank you for your response. I tried the clean reinstall with all the steps twice, and I am still having the same problem when I reinstall. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S23 running on Android 16, UI version 8.0. My phone is using 9.0.94.274

I tried it on my computer (desktop spotify app on windows) and didn't have the problem.

I tried it on my boyfriend's phone, another android, and it had the problem again. His phone is a Pixel 7a running Android 16.

Thanks for the info, @Eevee13!

Just to confirm, does this occur only when the playback is started from the podcast itself, or have you noticed it in your personal playlists / Your Episodes / New Episodes too? Also, is it with video podcasts or with all in general?

If this happens over Wi-Fi, it's worth testing if using mobile data instead makes any difference.

Let us know how it goes 👍

This issue also just started happening to me in the last few days. Tried all the methods and nothing has worked. On my PC it saves podcast progress. Sounds like an andriod issue.

Ooh that is interesting. It only happens when I try to resume a podcast from a playlist - whether it's My Episodes or another playlist I made. When I tried resuming a podcast from the podcast's page, it worked normally.

I tried turning off Wi-Fi and had the same problem.

Thanks for the details, everyone!
