Spotify does not resume after Google Maps navigation guidance

My Question or Issue

I have Google Maps and Spotify connected, to listen to podcasts while driving. While navigating, Spotify controls appear at the bottom of the Google Maps screen and work as intended. However, during the first voice navigation guidance, Spotify is paused, then resumes, but the music playback controls downgrade to a “Continue playing” button instead. After the second voice navigation guidance, Spotify stops and does not resume, while the controls remain "Continue playing". I have to physically hit "Continue playing" to resume the podcast, which is unsafe and not ideal.

1. The Spotify controls should not downgrade to "Continue playing" after the first voice navigation guidance.

2. Spotify should automatically resume playing the podcast after the second voice navigation guidance.

For some inexplicable reason, this does not happen with Apple's Podcast app, which auto-resumes after every voice navigation guidance.

Hey folks,

Thank you for reporting this issue to us.

We just wanted to let you know that the right folks are looking into this.

We're not able to provide an exact timeline for a fix, but we'd recommend always keeping your Spotify app up to date to ensure you're on the latest version.

In the meantime, as a workaround, we'd suggest that users do the following when playing podcasts:

  1. Disconnect from Google Maps
  2. Start playback natively from the app
  3. Enable Car mode from the app's settings

Thanks again!

Still having this trouble! Please fix this!

You guys have known about this problem for over a year. The “workaround” does not work. This is a bug that is dangerous because it affects people’s focus on the road. Please prioritize it.

I’m having this issue as well. It’s been happening for a couple months now. I tried switching to Apple Maps, which I don’t prefer, same issue. I tried all the recommended steps. It’s annoying and distracting while driving. Had to resolve to just listening with my AirPods bc it’s easier to double tap a pod than navigating “continue playing” on phone while driving. Any updates on this, @Xenia?

My Question or Issue

When listening to a podcast on Apple CarPlay, and using Waze, the podcast will not resume when Waze provides instructions. It does work fine with music, but not podcasts. My app is up to date. Thanks!

It's been 3 YEARS. This is still an unresolved issue.

Spotify music, fine (continues playing behind directions)

Audible, fine (pauses and rewinds automatically to before the direction)

Spotify audiobooks - nope. Not only does it stop the book the moment there's an instruction, it doesn't even offer the chance to restart from the same point if you pull over, stop the car, and hit play again.

So Spotify audiobooks for a long car journey? NO CHANCE.

What is the actual point Spotify?? I have Spotify premium. The book I wanted was included. I still ended up paying full price on Audible because of these stupid damn controls. Fuming.

  1. Hello from 2024. The one time I actually try to use Spotify to listen to a podcast after years of them spamming my homepage with the things, it doesn’t even work while I’m driving.
