My Question or Issue
Everytime I open the app it switches playback to repeat/loop. It's not much of an issue if I hit play on a playlist. But I generally don't use playlists except at work. When I search a song and click it to play, its automatically on repeat. Since the "playlist" for one song is well... One song. That means it defaults to repeating the same song. I know the "solution" is to just uncheck the loop. But it's a hassle to open the player and change it every single time I start the app with a new session. And I'm usually not thinking about that. I'm thinking "I wanna listen to Torna a Casa and the rest of the songs the algorithm suggests like it." And it makes it essentially impossible to start listening hands free.
Screenshots of behavior and settings.
Hey there folks,
Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to post their details in the thread. We really appreciate the cooperation and have forwarded the info to the relevant team. They'll be investigating and as soon as we have an update, we'll let you know.
In the meantime, make sure to keep Spotify up-to-date and the Community's here if you need help with anything else.
Cheers!
This only happens to me when connecting with Android Auto in my 2021 Ford Escape SYNC system. It is very annoying, but at least I know when it happens and can turn repeat mode off as soon as I leave the car.
This started happening on my Pixel 7 a couple of months ago. Every time I restart the app from either a phone restart or after I haven't used Spotify for a day or so the repeat resets itself to on. I manually turn it off and it is fine for the session, until I go for several hours without playing anything.
App: version 8.9.86.551 (current according to Play Store)
Phone: Android 14, build number:AP2A.240905.003
As you know from this thread it has been a problem for years. (I found one post from 2019 which ended with a request that we post here if we're still having this problem.)
Sorry in advance for venting my frustration below...
Especially, given that I'm paying for my Spotify service, I'm really disappointed in your app and wish you all would fix this. I know your engineers are capable of fixing this issue so I assume that this is on purpose. I realize I'm probably wrong but this is how I feel.
Thank you for listening and please, please, after 5 years... fix this issue.
Same issue here with a Samsung Galaxy S21. The repeat keeps being the default every time I start playing something ne w.

My Question or Issue
Every time I open the app it switches playback to repeat. When I only play 1 song it will automatically turn repeat on. Guess what? I never want to listen to a song on repeat. EVER. I know the "solution" is to just uncheck the loop, but it's a pain in the ass to open the player and change it every single time I start the app. I just want to be able to play a single song and then let the algorithm do its thing and play similar songs/artists. That's part of the reason I pay for Spotify, but now I can't even get that to work.
Considering switching to Apple Music if there isn't a solution for this.... Am I the only one?
Thank you!
I've posted this problem before and it's since gotten WORSE in the last couple of months.
I NEVER choose repeat and I'm not accidentally hitting the repeat button, but pretty much any time I search for something and choose top play a song Spotify chooses to switch on repeat.
It's extremely frustrating and annoying. If I want something to repeat, I'll choose it thank you Spotify. Please fix this.
If anything it seems to happen more on my iPhone than on my laptop, and possibly more when I'm bluetooth connected to the car.
...while we're on the subject of car mode - who's brilliant idea was it to add video to the car mode?!?!? What's the point of having a simplified/minimal view for use in the car if it's going to be playing **bleep** videos all the time?!?!
Spotify used to be held high as leaders in UX but it seems like you have no freaking care for your users (or their safety) at all anymore.
Still no update on this 2 years later? With the size of your app team, this shouldn't be a big deal to fix.
This is quite annoying, I experience the issue on both the Android app and the Desktop app for Mac. For playlists as well.
I’ve been dealing with this exact issue for at least three years now, and it’s really frustrating. Looking at past community posts, it’s clear this has been a problem since at least 2017, yet we haven’t had any meaningful updates in over four months. If this isn’t something that can be easily fixed, maybe a good workaround would be adding a setting to disable the repeat function and replace the button with something else. At least that would give people an option while a real fix is being worked on.
Hey everyone,
Thanks for posting in this thread! We appreciate your patience here while this is being looked into.
Just to confirm, does this happens when listening directly from the Spotify app on your phone or PC? Or does it only occur when listening in the car via Bluetooth?
And to help our teams with the investigation, we will need some more details. It would be great if you could send us the following (if you haven't already):
Does this happen to every song or is it intermittent? Any patterns on when this happen? (i.e. when app starts for the first time).
We'll keep an eye out for your replies!
Hi Maria,
it’s a little concerning that Spotify has 7 pages of comments about this issue and is still asking for more information. Have you read the comments to see what information other people have provided, or did you just post to meet an SLA to keep the post alive?
We can’t upload screen recordings very easily because we are limited to 5MB uploads… looks like you’re gonna have to do some testing to try to reproduce this yourself.
can you please make this a HIGH priority. It’s annoying af to have to deal with this nonsense.
please!
Hey Maria, thank you for posting to this thread! We appreciate you guys doing nothing for months and months about this issue despite the mountain of support information we've given you.
In order for us to feel heard and that you are in fact working on this issue, please provide us with the names of staff members that are looking into it as well as screenshots proving it is being looked into and possibly a video of the person investigating the issue.
Thanks for your help!
and such helpful replies to the topic..
you moan they dont reply and when they do you give em **bleep**...
Thank you for the response,
This issue mostly occurs when selecting a song from search while connected to my 2017 Subaru Outback's stereo. I have also noticed it occasionally on the desktop app for Windows, though I suspect the repeat toggle is simply syncing from my phone. Based on this entire thread, my working theory is that the issue stems from how Spotify interacts with the repeat toggle built into the car stereo, as the button itself is completely non-functional in my Subaru.
Literally all their moderators’ posts are “we need more information” not sure how happy you want us to be when they can’t properly investigate an issue with THEIR PRODUCT. As I mentioned earlier, there’s 7 pages of replies, I bet most of the earlier replies are at least somewhat helpful.
Users have reported that the Spotify app’s repeat function activates automatically across various devices and scenarios. The affected devices and contexts include:
• iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) with iOS 17.3.1: Users connecting via Bluetooth or Apple CarPlay to vehicles such as Ford and Subaru have experienced the repeat function enabling itself upon connection.
• Google Pixel 6 Pro running Android 14: Reports indicate that upon opening the Spotify app, playback defaults to repeat mode, particularly when playing individual songs outside of playlists.
• Denon AVR-S750H A/V Receiver: When streaming music through Spotify Connect, the receiver repeats the album despite the controlling device indicating that repeat is turned off.
• Samsung Galaxy S21: Users have noted that the repeat function defaults to “on” every time a new song is played.
• Google Pixel 7 with Android 14: When connected to a car’s audio system via Bluetooth, the repeat function is automatically set to “repeat playlist” and cannot be turned off.
• Google Pixel 8 Pro on Android 14: Users have reported that albums automatically set to repeat when connecting to a car’s Bluetooth system, specifically in a 2019 Volkswagen Up GTI.
• Samsung Galaxy devices and Windows Desktop App: Both platforms have exhibited behavior where the repeat function turns on automatically, even after being manually turned off.
These reports suggest a recurring issue with the Spotify app’s repeat function activating without user input across multiple devices and operating systems.
This has been a problem for way over a year, how is it still not resolved?
