I woke up this morning, went to my Spotify Discover page looking for some new music, and found this...
Wiz Khalifa, Paramore, Rascal Flatts, My Chemical Romance, Metallica, Queen, Haim. Britney Spears, Brad Paisley, Naughty Boy, Lady Antebellum, Florence and the Machine, 50 Cent, R. Kelly, T.I. The Lumineers.
Top 40 hits from today, and my adolescence. Hip hop. Twang pop. Current pop-alternative. Generic classic rock.
At the risk of sounding like a hipster, my musical taste is varried, and almost never dips into any of those piedgon holes, save for classic rock. Spotify used to be fantastic at showing me artists based on the artists I enjoy. They seemed not to pander to the most popular or succesful either. I got results from artists with a range of followers, from millions, down to dozens. Most new music I've listened to in the past year, including many of my new favorites stemmed from that page.
At first I thought this was a bug, something temporarily wrong with my page. Then I found this... http://community.spotify.com/t5/Spotify-Announcements/What-happened-to-Discover/td-p/857597/page/8
Some seem to have been affected by this a few months ago. I suppose it's just caught up with me. On the tenth page of that thread, someone recommends we voice our concerns here. So I am.
Please Spotify, aside from having a very comprehensive library of music, the Discover page was what I loved most about you. Bring it back. Leave the pop on the Top Lists page where it belongs.
PS: Yes, that's μTorrent I have open. Look what you're making me do!
Apperently, this behaviour is the way spotify intended - according to @spotifycare it took them a month to give me this answer.
truly disappointed and my premium account will be cancelled soon.
Bring it back like moloko!
I wanted to know if the version for iphone and 6 out because I did not manage to put it on my Apple weird yet on the other his great work.
thank you if the other is the same worries to give me the solution?
please bring discover back and don't take it away. like others, i have found so much great new music that's waaaaaaaaaay off the beaten path using discover. other features on spotify can't compare - not even close. in fact i don't even use them. discover is what sets spotify apart. won't be worth paying the premium without it.
I keep asking myself what I did to deserve 'Highlights' instead of 'Discover' and I can't figure it out. Did I do something in my previous life that would make me deserve such a harsh punishment? Did I say something bad about Spotify behind their back? Maybe I used Discover too much and now they’re letting other people use it?
Every day I check to see if Discover has magically found its way back to my Spotify, but every day I’m sadly disappointed. Highlights is really really good…for nothing. I don’t need Highlights from George Ezra, Wu Tang Clan or the masked ‘raucous rockers’ that call themselves Slipknot…I need my old Spotify back, the one that had Discover.
Discover, if you can hear me out there, please come home. I won’t even be mad when I see you again.
Discover has been missing on my interface for a while now, I'm finding myself questioning do I want Spotify now? I used it everyday before so thought the cost was worth it, now I hardly use it. I've tried to use the The last.FM app instead and it's terrible, I'm giving it one more month then I'm affraid it's the chop if no more discover function.
Discover is the best. Anything else is the worst, and I would like to have discover back.
This is only one in a row of un-aweness lately. The Shuffle button being another. Spotify, we love music, you want to ruin that! Tha is not how it all started..
The discover feature is the only reason I pay for and use Spotify. If it doesn't come back soon, I will be cancelling my account and switching to another streaming service.
It is quite clear that Spotify is not taking their customers seriously and basically treats us as a joke.
Whoever you contact from Spotify - it is always the same answer; reinstall, even create new accounts. How many developers would it take to realise that discover is broken ? One and it will take 5 minutes to fix it, but there is a certain reluctance to do so.
In the mean time, the forums are full with questions, complaints, spotify doesn't care.

Under Browse and then search for "Discover". I also couln't find it this afternoon, but this evening started searching and I found it under "Top Lists", "New Releases" on Iphone, Ipad, Android & OSX app.
It is still there, but a little bit hidden!
- It is still there, but a little bit hidden!
Yes it is still there, the point is that the discovery suggestions that are given have nothing to do with your music taste.
In case you think it is all fine, try scrolling down a couple of pages (on desktop client this is easier)
Discover was removed and replaced with Hightlights as a test for some users according to what I was told by tech support. If so, the experimnet is a failure. Highlights is useless, basically just advertising for artists that Spotify wants to promote. Highlighs lacks any context. I have no idea why I should click on anything listed there. It's a collection of washed-up pop stars and unknown artists who may be interesting or not, but there's no way of telling. If Spotify is going to change the user interface, why not add some functionality rather than removing useful options?
Yup! really missing the discover option, PLEASE bring it back!!!!
Sent my kudos for this "idea" hopefully for the benefit of those of you who want to stick around.
It's been a month since I posted in the Community about my disappointment with this missing feature from my paid service. There has been no real concern from customer support after multiple users' inquiries and no restoration of the feature. I'm voting with my dollars on this now.
I really liked this service up until very recently... there are just too many competitors within the last few years for you to remove features and ignore your paying customers. Especially when some of the competitors offer similar library size and a similar service as Discover.
Hope the paid "Highlights" can cover your business expenses!
Wow, first Spotify ruins their interface, then they take away the Discover feature.
Time to start streaming KEXP on iTunes again.
Considering this thread and the many like it, as well as my own my own experience over the past months, certain things are clear. Spotify is focused on the Discover feature for some reason. They either want to kill it slowly or improve it. They are undoubtedly being more effective at the former. It's also clear they have the ability to do A/B testing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A/B_testing) and they are, which is an odd approach to killing a feature. One poster speculated the cause could be the investment of the recommendation engine or related engineering. That's certainly consistent with their behaviour.
The frustration they have subjected us to has also taught me something valuable. For me, Discover is the most important feature of Spotify. It's more important than my playlist or even the ability to take my music with me (I've enjoyed my Premium subscription for years). I'm also happy to pay for music - it's important to me that musicians be payed for their efforts. I want Spotify's Discover to remain awesome, but their lack of transparency and slow responses has made this experiment too difficult for me to be a part of. I wish them luck.
I have just canceled my Premium subscription and am now seaking alternative services. Hopefully I'll be able to find a service that values a high quality recommendation engine as much as I thought Spotify did*. If I don't find anything, I'll check back occasionally with my fingers crossed.
* To be clear, the version of Discover I find superior is the one that provides context in its recommendations. Not the Netflix style navigation, or Highlights, etc. Context is critical when you bounce between different genres.
Well done Spotify, round of applause, a lesson on how to piss off as many of your paying customers as possible, remove your best feature and replace it with "highlights"...
That's my subscription cancelled 🙂
Woo Hoooo!!!
They brought it back. Spotify Discover is back my friends 🙂
I just restarted and went to the Browse, just for snicks, and it's right there again. Way to go Spotify devs and lurkers.
I have been building a larger YouTube playlist since this happend and Spotify corrected it just in time. I was about to cancel in January.
THIS PLEASES ME
