Bring back the Discover page's functionality!

Bring back the Discover page's functionality!

I woke up this morning, went to my Spotify Discover page looking for some new music, and found this...

Spotify Screenshot 10-23-2014.png

Wiz Khalifa, Paramore, Rascal Flatts, My Chemical Romance, Metallica, Queen, Haim. Britney Spears, Brad Paisley, Naughty Boy, Lady Antebellum, Florence and the Machine, 50 Cent, R. Kelly, T.I. The Lumineers.

Top 40 hits from today, and my adolescence. Hip hop. Twang pop. Current pop-alternative. Generic classic rock.

At the risk of sounding like a hipster, my musical taste is varried, and almost never dips into any of those piedgon holes, save for classic rock. Spotify used to be fantastic at showing me artists based on the artists I enjoy. They seemed not to pander to the most popular or succesful either. I got results from artists with a range of followers, from millions, down to dozens. Most new music I've listened to in the past year, including many of my new favorites stemmed from that page.

At first I thought this was a bug, something temporarily wrong with my page. Then I found this... http://community.spotify.com/t5/Spotify-Announcements/What-happened-to-Discover/td-p/857597/page/8

Some seem to have been affected by this a few months ago. I suppose it's just caught up with me. On the tenth page of that thread, someone recommends we voice our concerns here. So I am.

Please Spotify, aside from having a very comprehensive library of music, the Discover page was what I loved most about you. Bring it back. Leave the pop on the Top Lists page where it belongs.

PS: Yes, that's μTorrent I have open. Look what you're making me do!

As another premium user experencing the loss of the Discover option, can anyone comment how your option reappeared?

I am another user who loved the Discover option, only to see mine gone.

Mine simply showed back up later on in the day with no explanation, like nothing ever happened.

keep Discover the way it was... if it were to be removed or go back to suggesting ridiculous 'popular in your area' songs and artists.. the user experience would be horribly degraded

It is not an idea, it is a major bug and needs to be fixed.

- people who say that it's "fixed" - try scrolling down for a bit...

Discover appears to be officially gone. Why? Why is it that companies always think newer and different is better? There is a reason I subscribe to Spotify but if those reasons keep disappearing than I will look to one of the new services out there.

Hey @TakeitEasy6 we recently did a bit of behind-the-scenes maintenance on this. Are you still only getting 'trending' suggestions in your area?

Or is your Discover giving you more recommendations based on what you're listening to lately?

If i it understand correctly: "ideas" with less than 100 kudos will not even be taken into consideration - thus "discover" will just be gone soon, as the fantastic new "highlights" are well underway in testing.

The very best thing with Spotify is no doubt "Discover". It's excellent! Or should I say it WAS excellent?

But first Spotify took it away from the left column and placed it instead "hidden" behind "more". Then, lately, I receive a lot less suggestions that follow what I listen to (in other words = personal suggestions) and a LOT more crap suggestions á la "popular tracks/popular in your area" - of which I'm TOTALLY uninterested!

WHY, Spotify, have you made these severe deteriorations? WHY have you committed this "Discover suicide"?

If this new crap will go on like this from now on I will probably cancel Spotify. To quote J-Casio: "I may have to just cancel my premium service and look elsewhere for my music streaming needs".

At the risk of sounding like a troll (ok, I am a troll, but a thoughtful troll) we need not justify our reaction to the Discover-ectomy. We pay for a service, and when that service gets changed, we should object, and strenuously. Nice to hear I'm not in the minority of the Pissed, but really. Spotify. What the F*ck. If you're running a steakhouse, you don't pull your ribeye from the menu and expect your customers to blandly accept and move on to the sirloin strip.

As pointed out above, searching for spotify:app:discover will bring up the Discover tab (at least on Windows). However, the tab disppaears as soon as you go to an artist or any other page, and Highlights comes back.

Several people have suggested the Last.fm app as an alternative to Discover. Last.fm is nice, but the app doesn't exist on android, while Discover used to.

If anyone from Spotify monitors these discussions, please bring back Discover on all systems.

My Discover button is completely gone!  Does anyone else have this issue?  This is my most used feature with Spotify to find new music!
What is going on???

Am I doing something wrong?

The Discover feature was the main reason for using Spotify, please, bring it back!

Huh, I haven't had this issue. My Discover tab is still there, and it still has recommendations based on what I listen to.

Oh my god!  You killed Discover!?  You bastards!

WTF are you thinking?  Attempts to catagorize is FAIL!!!!  It always has been.

Discover allowed me to see artists that were little known, don't fit a standard Genre and had maybe 40 fans in 1998 for 6 months.  That was the point to D I S C O V E R new music.  Not to be told what is already playing on Sirius XM.

Bands I discovered:

My Gold Mask, Ascii Disko, ASSS, Chelsea Wolfe, Cold Cave, Das Moon, Kas Produkt, The KVB, Lebanon Hanover, Modern Witch, Salem, White Ring, Xenia Beliayeva, Volkova.... and on and on.  This is not your standard crap.  Not a single one of those is on the top anything.  How about Nouvelle Vague?  Where you putting them?

You can't find these in your "Genre & Moods" like Rock or Hip Hop.  Are you kidding me???  You got some kind of granular search in the Database like "look for: Belgium, 80's, Minimal, Synth, Darkwave with a female lead" or how about " something lugubrious and mellancholy with a reggae beat."  If not you FAIL!

If this is not corrected I am giving up my subscription.  Discover is what made Spotify for me.  I don't need to hear the same **bleep** everyone else plays and have to pay for it.  I'll take my money elsewhere and tell others to do the same.

394 Discovered Music in this catagory alone

ok, so some discussion with @spotifycares on twitter seem to indicate to me that they are considering replacing Discover with Highlights, and they asked for feedback in the forums. for me, music discovery is essential to my spotify experience. when discover is working well, it statisfies that need for me. its not perfect, but i don't expect it to be, i just want some new directions to look in for new music. highlights has no interest for me. it seems to list music that i would not listen to or that i already have a good appreciation of. so, for me,  the loss of discover would dramatically affect my use of spotify i a very negative sense.

(Copied from another post I made)

Discover is sooo much better, I mean it isn't even a contest. Discover actually gives you recomendations based on tracks and artists you listen to a lot. Highlights is only adverts for stuff that is popular.

Discover has pages and pages of suggestions, Highlights has 15 suggestions...

Discover seems to create an endless playlist for you at random that is new and fresh each time you play it. Highlights only works like a regular playlist with like 20 songs.

Discover is also the reason I decided to start paying for spotify, and if it doesn't come back I will be cancelling my subscription. I advise others to do the same.

If you want Highlights, then have it in addition to Discover. they are nothing alike, and so highlights is not a valid replacement.

Honestly I don't see why they'd even think to get rid of a feature like that, what are your options outside of discover? Going into radio and circling through the songs that are already in your album until you find something interesting? I mean tuck it away in a corner or somewhere difficult to reach if you want your highlight page to gain more traffic, but don't get rid of it completely, how does that help anyone?

I mean everyone already knows all the artists in the highlights page, that's why they're highlighted in the first place, because they're popular enough to make it that far. It's like the 123 top lists page, it's useful for finding popular music but you're not going to see that many artists you don't recognise already.

People have been asking why Spotify would remove discover. Just a theory, but recommendations engines are not cheap. Netflix pays $150 million per year for theirs. Maybe Spotify is trying to pinch pennies here. Maybe they've seen that the average listener just doesn't go that deep into the catalog. Like I said, just a theory. But! If that's the case, then make discover a feature available only to premium users. I don't know anymore...
