Playback Restricted Devices Greyed Out

Playback Restricted Devices Greyed Out

I cannot connect my Spotify to echo devices anymore. All devices greyed out and read 'Playback Restricted'. Have tried deleting and reinstalling Spotify and Alexa apps, clearing cache, resetting wifi, unplugging and re-powering echos. All to no avail. Work-arounds very welcome

I think that I figured it out. You have to unlink the Spotify Skill in Alexa app, and re-link. That should do the trick.

I had this issue as well but it resolved when I unlinked the spotify skill from the Alexa app and then relinked the spotify.

Has this been resolved? I’m having this issue all of a sudden I’m only one of my speakers. Just happens to be the newest one. All others are not greyed out

I had the same issue for the longest time. When on spotify i would pull out the list of devices i could listen on and my echo was displayed as playback restricted.  (I avoided connecting my phone vía Bluetooth bc i didnt want my phone’s sounds on the speaker so i never connect it on bluetooth) but since i really wanted to use the echo as a speaker i recently tried connecting through BT (actually going to my BT settings and connecting to my echo) and for some reason that seemed to work. My phones info doesnt seem to transfer to the echo but now i can select it to play on spotify app.  Maybe try a BT connection and going back to try it on spotify?

disabling and enabling the spotify skill worked for me

Not sure if anyone’s mentioned this yet, but it could be the issue for some of you - the echo devices can only pull from Spotify’s own database, so if the song/podcast/etc. is something you’ve added to Spotify from a local file on your computer or phone, you’ll get the “playback restricted” notice.  Took me ages to figure that out!

Hey, guys!
Was having the same problem... So what I've done was:
1. Close Spotify app.

2. Open Alexa, open the "play" menu and click on "manage your services".

3. Click on "Spotify" and "forget skill". (or something like that, mine is on pt-BR)

 4. Open the Spotify app again and link your Echo once more.

Worked with me!
Hope to help you as well

Sadly this isn’t working, I think it’s something to do with this specific BBC podcast - it’s the only thing that won’t play!

This fixed the problem for me, thank you!

These steps worked for me:
1) Removed Spotify skill in Alexa app
2) Link back Spotify and Alexa app
3) Unplugged the Echo from the power for 1 minute
4) Plug back in the Echo

I had one Echo Dot with the Playback Restricted bug. I believe the error came about after I changed the name of the Echo in the Alexa app (this Echo was also part of a group). Spotify was still showing the old name and it seems like the name change didn't carry over to Spotify, thus causing the glitch. I was able to recreate this glitch twice.

But this is what worked for me: In the Alexa App I removed the faulty Echo from its group and changed its name. Then I immediately unplugged it and let it sit for about 30s. When I plugged it back in, Spotify recognized it as a new device and all functionality was back (except the Everywhere multi room music group, I had to recreate that group). Spotify now shows both the old and new device names, even after the fix, without an option to delete the faulty one. Hope this helps.

I am having this issue too. So annoying. I was teaching a yoga class this morning and could not play my list on my device. I just signed up for Spotify and will need to find something else. This cant happen again in my line of work.

I have a Juke amp, and not an echo, but I have the same problem.  It says playback restricted when I try to use the Spotify input, but works if I put it over AirPlay.

Hi to all

I add another post as I experience the same. I am using Google Home and Sonos. In Spotify, I cannot play podcast nor music as my Sonos (only this one and not Google Homes) has status "Playback Restricted".
I contacted Sonos. All works fine as I can play any music / podcast with "Air Play" from my iPhone Lock Screen (icon top right on the playing widget). Just did it tight now to double check my words.

I really hope you will bale to solve our issues soon

i use

Spotify version 8.7.66.438

iPhone version 15.6.1

Sonos One, OS S2, version 14.15

@Jeremy

Thank you for you help

I am trying to get my Onkyo TX-NR727 audio-video receiver (with the latest firmware) to stream content from Spotify®, but while my receiver shows up in the Devices section of my iPhone 12 Pro Max Spotify® app, it is grayed out and labeled "Playback restricted" with no other information provided. My iPhone and the receiver are on the same WiFi network, and the receiver can stream content from other providers like T****n with no problems.  I tried cycling power on the iPhone, and pulling the plug to recycle power on both the receiver and my Motorola SBG6580 wireless gateway and got the same problem.  I temporarily turned off the firewall in the wireless gateway, restarted everything, but that did not help either.  I would like respectfully to suggest that the Spotify® app should display a more helpful error message than just "Playback restricted".  I am able to stream from Spotify® to my receiver using Bluetooth, but this prevents me from using Bluetooth on my phone for other uses.  Also, the fidelity of music streamed directly to my receiver is better than if it has to go to my phone, and then over Bluetooth to my receiver. I also tried with the most recent wireless gateway that COMCAST Xfinity supplies and a different home network and got the same results: my AV receiver shows up correctly, but its identifier is grayed out and it is labeled "Playback restricted".

Hey there,

Thanks for the replies.

Could you try the solutions proposed earlier in the thread (a few posts above this one) and let us know how they went for you?

Keep us posted,

Cheers!

I have tried all these solutions and nothing has fixed for me - still cannot play this one specific BBC podcast through Spotify on echo

I did try some (my Sonos is not part of a group) and nothing changed.
It is weird to be able to use airplay with my Sonos but not use my Sonos within spotify.
hope all our tests, cases will help you tackle this issue

we'll stay tuned

Patrice

Hello Dian,

Thank you for your reply here.  None of the solutions proposed earlier in this thread are applicable to me since I am not using an Echo, Alexa, Sonos, Google Home nor AirPlay.  I am using an Onkyo TX-NR727 AV Receiver as my audio device.  I am not attempting streaming a song that I added from my desktop PC, but a song in the standard Spotify database.  (I will comment that I am new user and was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the breath of the Spotify music database since my musical tastes are somewhat uncommon: Scott Ross harpsichord and Zia Mohiuddin Dagar rudra veena, for example, and you had both of them!  Nice!)  As mentioned in my initial post, I am able to use the Spotify app on my iPhone 12 Pro Max to stream over Bluetooth to my receiver, or use my desktop PC to access Spotify and send the audio to my receiver, either by Bluetooth or by a line-out cable.  However, I would like the convenience and optimum fidelity of having my receiver directly receive the streamed music from Spotify without having to fire up my PC and use it to receive the network stream.  I deleted the Spotify app from my iPhone and reinstalled it, and got the same results.  I know everything (my iPhone, my AV Receiver which is connected to my wireless gateway and the Spotify servers) are talking and I am being authenticated since the receiver's ID "TX-NR727" shows up in the device list in the Spotify app Devices section, however, it is labelled "Playback restricted" in gray and so cannot be selected as a playback device. This ID cannot be changed and there is no linking process as with smart speakers. As I mentioned, I can connect to other streaming services such as T****n and stream with the AV Receiver, so I know my AV Receiver and network infrastructure are functional.

I fired up the Spotify app on my desktop PC and my AV Receiver shows up in the "Connect to a device" pop up, but it is grayed out, and labeled, "Unavailable to control".  In green is, "Listening On  This Computer" and I can stream music using the desktop app (using a line out cable from my PC to the receiver.)  I note that in in the STREAMERS AND SEPARATES compatible devices list section of the Spotify website, the Onkyo TX-NR646 is listed. This receiver is almost identical to the TX-NR727 that I am using.

Hey @FishFoot,

Thanks for the reply.

Could you check the solution from this thread? Did it work?

Keep us posted,

Cheers!
