My Question or Issue

Right now, we are using a Premium account together with our family, with several playlists and a lot of liked songs. So this is not about several accs joining but on 1 account that has all the music.

We want to switch to the Family plan but I would like to be sure on what happens to the liked songs? Does one person get them, or will they show up at every new account created? The same for playlists, have I understood it correctly that you can transfer those 'officially' (ie not just saving a public playlist) to the new account(s) created? About those I also wondered whether two accounts can transfer the same playlist, and also who will be showing up as the creator of the playlist when you make it public on your account. For both the exported playlists and the liked songs I also wondered whether the correct dates will be shown, or that they would be created as new.

Would love to have the details on how the switch works beforehand, as the music I've collected and their time stamps are rather important to me! many thanks in advance 🙂

Hey there @rachel_p,

Thanks for the questions and welcome to the Community.

I'll do my best to explain this 🙂

When you switch from Premium Individual to Premium Family, the subscription type of your original account changes. So all the Liked Songs/ Playlists/ Saved albums etc. will remain only on the original account. The account will become a Family Plan Manager account. After that is done your family members will need to create new free Spotify accounts. Then you'll need to send them invitations to join the Family plan. Once they join the plan, their accounts will become Premium accounts with Premium features, but they won't be paying a monthly fee, only you as the plan Manager will be paying for the subscription.

If the new members want to have the family playlists which you've created previously, they simply need to follow (hit the Like button) on the playlists that will be on the profile page of your original account and they'll be added to their library 🙂

Unfortunately there is no way to transfer the Liked Songs or Albums/ Artists that you've followed on the original account to the accounts of the family members. They'll have to follow and like Albums and Artists on their own accounts.

You can read our guide to the Family Plan here.

Live, love, laugh and listen to music 🙂

It‘s sad that it works like this and it does mean that we will not change my shared account to a family plan as my children wouldn‘t be happy at all to lose control over their long developed playlists. So why isn‘t it technically possible to transfer playlists to the various family plan accounts? Should be possible to solve this issue.
