Why can’t kids have their own account, like Netflix?

Why can’t kids have their own account, like Netflix?

I’ve just upgraded to a Spotify for Family account and I’m so disappointed to find out I can’t set up a profile for my two-year old son. Now, even though he’s of a digital age, I think he’s a little too young for an email address, seeing as he has only just mastered the ABC song. I’m also uncomfortable lying about his age as a workaround, as some people have suggested - call me old fashioned.

But what he does have is a keen interest in music, and shouldn’t that be encouraged? As I type, at 5:30 in the morning, he’s been listening to Georgia by Emily King on loop since 7:30 last night - you’re welcome for the royalties, Emily. That’s what toddlers do. It means that in my insomniac state, I can’t take advantage of my new Family Account to listen to a podcast in my room, or else Emily King might be switched off and - horror of horrors - the baby might wake. Spotify, do none of you have kids?!

here’s a few things to get off my chest:

  • you say that it can be used by six people  who reside in the same house. How many families consist of six people over 13 in the same house?!
  • If Spotify is meant for 13s and over, why are there so many versions of Wheels on the sodding Bus?!
  • Netflix managed it. They’re not performing too poorly. Profits seem steady despite their relaxed attitude to inviting - god forbid - children to have a profile without creating a whole fake digital profile for them.

i’m going to use this insomnia to set up profiles for my four fake teenage children, aged 13, 15, 17 and the 18 year old before she heads off to a uni dorm and, I guess, ceases to be in our family. Then I’m going to log in to each of these accounts and play the music of undiscovered indie talent on a loop, 24/7, so you have to pay them royalties. That might make my £14.99 month investment worth it.

Hey @emurobot.

Thanks for getting in touch with us and for giving us your feedback.

This idea was submitted a while ago here, but it didn't garner enough votes, so the idea has become inactive. If you want you can create a new idea about it here 🙂

Hope that helps!

I wrote this four years ago, and even though you now have a Spotify kids app, you can’t connect it to Alexa, which means my Spotify Wrapped is going to be **bleep** once again this year, and only you guys will know how much anguish that causes. It also means I’ve been paying for family for 4 years unnecessarily, which equates to about £200.

Ouch.
