Spotify Duo - switch plan manager

Solved!

Spotify Duo - switch plan manager

Hi, my wife and myself are in a Spotify Duo subscription. It started with a subscription I gifted as a present for her, then I joined too and we switched to Duo.

Unfortunately, that made her the plan manager of our plan, which she does not want. We'd like to switch that, so that I would be the manager of the plan and of the payments.

Is that easily possible? Thanks for your support!

Hi @26058752,

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community, and welcome!

Unfortunately, at the moment there isn’t a way to change the plan manager for a Premium Duo plan once they've signed up. However, the current plan manager can cancel the plan, and then you can start a new Premium Duo plan as its plan manager.

No worries, changing subscription plans won't cause anyone to lose anyone to lose any of their playlists, saved music, or settings.

Your wife can first cancel the existing Premium Duo plan by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your account page
  2. Under Manage your plan, click Change Plan
  3. Scroll to Cancel Spotify and click Cancel Premium

At your next billing date (which you can view on your account page), the accounts of both members of the current Premium Duo plan will switch to the free service. At that time, you can start a new Premium Duo plan here as its plan manager, and then invite your wife to the new plan by following these steps.

Bear in mind that to accept the invite, the other member must live at the same address as the plan manager. Note as well that members can only switch between different Premium Duo or Premium Family plans once in 12 months.

You can also read more about how Premium Duo works in this support article as well as in this FAQ article.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and have a good day!

Hi @AdamDam, Can you please clarify what you mean by "Note as well that members can only switch between different Premium Duo or Premium Family plans once in 12 months." For example: If you just created a duo plan, but set up the wrong user as plan manager, do you need to wait 12 months before cancelling and creating a new duo account under the other user? Are both users locked from being in the new Duo plan, since it will have been created within 12 months of the original? Or can you cancel and just create a new one, with the plan manager swapped?

Hi @TexasPete2625,

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community, and welcome!

The “12 months rule” that I mentioned refers specifically to joining someone else’s Premium Duo or Premium Family plan, and then later joining a different person’s Premium Duo or Premium Family plan. This type of “switch” as a member of these types of subscription plans is allowed, but only once in 12 months.

Note that starting your own Premium Duo/Family plan as the plan manager doesn’t affect this rule—only joining someone else’s Premium Duo/Family plan will restrict you from joining a different one more than once in 12 months.

In this scenario about canceling a Premium Duo plan and then someone else in the household starting a new Premium Duo plan, in most cases this 12 months rule won’t apply to prevent the original Premium Duo plan manager from joining the new Premium Duo plan with its intended plan manager.

This is because for the original plan manager, starting that initial Premium Duo plan doesn’t count towards the 12 months rule for them, as it’s their own plan rather than someone else’s that they’re joining. And when they then join the new Premium Duo plan as a member, it could be the first time in 12 months that they joined someone else’s Premium Duo/Family plan, in which case it wouldn’t count as a “switch” that would be relevant to the 12 months rule, either. For the new Premium Duo plan manager, starting the new Premium Duo plan also won’t count towards this restriction for them, since they'd be the plan manager of it rather than joining as a member.

The 12 months rule will only cause an issue in this scenario if the original Premium Duo plan manager had previously joined two different Premium Duo or Family plans as a member, within the span of 12 months. In that case, they’d have to wait to join the new Premium Duo plan started by the intended plan manager, since it would then be the second time they’d be attempting to switch to a different Premium Duo/Family plan as a member in 12 months.

I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions.

Have a good day!

Hi Adam,

I had the same question and found your solution.

Hoping you might help with my follow up question:

We have cancelled my spouse's premium duo account, which would have renewed at the start of July.

Do we have to wait until then to start a new duo account with me as the manager or can we do it now? I realize we'll "lose" a bit of money, but would rather set it up asap if that's possible.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi @tmspiel,

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community, and welcome!

Unfortunately, I can confirm that you’ll need to wait until your accounts in the existing Premium Duo plan will revert to the free service at the start of July, to be able to subscribe to a new Premium Duo plan with a new plan manager.

Thanks for the quick reply! I appreciate the information.

Me and my partner have the premium duo account. He is currently listed as plan manager, so gets the audiobook listening hours which can’t be shared with me as a member of the plan. He does not (and has no interest in) listening to audiobooks but I do. Is there a way to switch the plan manager to myself so I can then benefit from the listening hours?
I’m worried that switching to free and then back to duo with me as plan manager won’t work as I read somewhere that you can only switch plans once every 12 months.
