My Question or Issue

hi, i'm trying to add local files from my files onto spotify on my iphone xr. i've tried just switching on "add local files" in settings but nothing has imported from files. do the files need to be in apple music? do they need to be of a certain format? what am i missing here? i don't have a mac to transfer music from.
