How can I listen to just one podcast episode (Autoplay is disabled)?

How can I listen to just one podcast episode (Autoplay is disabled)?

My Question or Issue

According to related posts it would seem that many users prefer to listen to several episodes of a podcast on autoplay. I am the opposite. One of my scenarios: Play a particular podcast episode and go to sleep. The sleep timer is a great feature for music, but it does not work well with podcasts because episodes rarely come in exact durations of 5, 10, 15 etc. minutes. So using the sleep timer would mean that the app stops playing before the episode is over or start the next and stop while playing it. I don't want a history of half-played episodes on my phone.

According to this fix report , an issue with podcasts not autoplaying was recently fixed. That's great for those who want it, but is it possible that this correction is having an adverse effect on how podcasts interact with the queue if Autoplay is disabled in settings?

I can see three ways of starting a podcast episode:

  1. Go to the podcast and tap Play for an episode while looking at the list of episodes.
  2. Tap the title of an episode so that it's details are displayed, then tap Play.
  3. Add an episode to the queue in the same way you add a song.

According to a post I read, but cannot find anymore, procedure no. 2 should only play that particular episode, then stop. Only that it doesn't (anymore).

I need a reliable way of achieving this that would ideally also work over CarPlay. Ultimately, having two Autplay switches in settings (one for music, one for podcasts) might be the best approach and give everyone the flexibility they need.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks

Heddy

This is true and does work,  but why should I have to remember to do that every single time? I just want to play the podcast I’ve chosen.  Every time. I’ve checked that I’ve turned auto play off but it’s like it’s on.

That's okay, I'll just use one of the many other podcast players that don't have this "feature."

There is 2023 in the world. Nothing changed on Spotify. Subsequent episodes are still queued.

How could this not have been resolved? Ridiculous.

This is really frustrating when you pay a premium family package price every month.

You all are missing the solution posted by Jimo7 on this thread.  Tested and confirmed it works.  Click on the smaller podcast "album cover" / thumbnail to go full screen, click on the moon for the sleep timer, choose end of episode.  It will play until end of episode and stop.

This shouldn't be a thing you have to select each time you listen to a podcast. Sure, keep it as the default, but we should be able to change a setting and never have to deal with this again, if that's what we want.

Please give us the option to remove old podcasts from playlists. With newscasts this is especially annoying, with other types of podcasts it may be desirable to play them multiple times. Creating a user option where multiple outdated podcast can be removed all at once is by far the best solution for rectifying this annoyance. Really, waking up in the middle of the night to old newscasts after falling asleep listening to the current one is an annoyance we can all do without.

How are individual auto play switches not implemented yet? It’s September 2023 — this issue is several years old. I went to sleep with some Tibetan Singing Bowls and was rudely awakened by a political podcast about Guns from a show that I don’t even follow. At least allow me to mark some shows with “Do not play this”. I’m astounded by how angry I am at 5:50am — I was literally asleep for the Guns, but here I am writing this over an hour before my alarm will go off.

It's too bad. The lack of being able to disable autoplay for podcasts is a deal breaker for me. I was looking for an alternative to Google Podcasts and was hoping Spotify could be it but I'll have to search elsewhere. Fix this Spotify, I want to use your app for podcasts!

I just want to voice but this is a problem for me too. I routinely drive 3 hours to and from San Francisco and want to play a single podcast at a time and do not want anything to auto start on its own.

I started using spotify because Stitcher shut down and Stitcher did this with no problem. Since Spotify can't do it I will be trying something else and will rarley use Spotify for music or anything else because of it.

I have this same problem but for some reason instead of playing the next episode of the podcast I actually wanna listen to, it JUST PLAYS A RANDOM EPISODE OF **bleep** FLAGRANT, I NEVER WANNA LISTEN TO FLAGRANT AND I DONT EVEN FOLLOW THEM, AND YET IT IS ALWAYS THE FIRST TO PLAY WHEN THE PODCAST IM ACTUALLY LISTENING TO FINISHES. literally why is there no option to hide a podcast. I see those two guys faces in my **bleep**ing nightmares now.

Same here, it's indeed incomprehensible that this is not possible.

2 years later & they still haven't fixed this? According to Spotify, you can go to Playback settings and turn off Autoplay to Off but there's no such setting. Just Autoplay similiar content.

I've set that to no but next episode still autoplays wven though I'm playing a downloaded episode!

This is actually costing money because I end up going over on my data plan. Yes, I don't pay for unlimited data & nwver have a prpblem wxcept for Spotify.

What else do people use instead of Spotify? I'm willing to switch.

The problem still exists.

Spotify, please, provide the option to play ONLY ONE podcast episode..

The proposed settings change should also be made for Audiobooks.  If I forget just one time to change to the “end of chapter” setting then I very quickly burn through my 15 hours.

wth almost 3 years down the line still no fix. P

My Question or Issue

I need to stop podcasts from auto playing the next episode, but the "autoplay" setting does not exist for me to toggle off. Does anyone else have this problem, or know where this setting is found if it's moved please?

I think it should be under 'playback" but it's not there.

3 years later and this is still not fixed.  Spotify is a small company with only a few staff so I'll give them a break.

I cancelled my Spotify subscription months ago because of this issue. I go to sleep listening to episode 2. When I wake up the podcast still playing and is on episode 30. I absolutely hate it. I hoped after some months Spotify would have fixed this problem.  Nothing has changed. Back to the crappie podcast apps
