How does Spotify Offline Mode work?

In order to play songs offline that I've made available locally, do I *have to* activate Offline Mode in settings? Or would the Offline Mode setting simply limit me to play only those songs that are saved locally on the device?

On my iPhone I have made a handful of songs and albums available for offline use locally on the device. Now when I play these - without activating offline mode in settings - I wonder if they are played offline from the device, or are they still streamed?

You don't have to switch it to offline mode. The app will play the downloaded version instead of streaming.

A little bit of data is still used for other things in the app, so to make sure no data at all is used, the best thing to do is to turn on offline mode so that only downloaded content can be played.
