Ipad App far too memory intensive

Ever since the iPad app came out, I've more or less been unable to use it. I appreciate the original iPad 1 has a bit less ram than newer models, but when the first version of the Spotify iPad app came out, it would crash every other app I tried to run when Spotify was in the background. Every time. Lately, I'm not sure if there's perhaps been an updated version released, but now the app refuses to ever connect. It contantly shows connecting but never manages it. I have a task killer installed (pretty much essential for anyone with an iPad 1 these days) and also try rebooting but it still wont connect.

My Spotify account works fine on my android phone and on my PC, but is unusable on the ipad. Any suggestions?
