Sorry I should have updated this. Figured out what was going on for me although not sure it’ll help everyone.
This was occurring where I played a playlist via an Alexa device. It turned out that Amazon, in their infinite wisdom, had added a new Autoplay feature and defaulted it to on. To turn off you need to go More> Music and More> Settings>Autoplay from the Alexa app. Hope it’s ok to have instructions for Alexa on here as this solved the issue for me.

I had this same issues. All of the above steps failed. What worked for me was to delete the app off my phone and redownload. It only affected my phone.
delete app and redownload
I realised I\d accidentally added songs to my queue and it was insisting those songs are listened to, even though I had changed playlists. It hasn't done this before, usually it cleared the queue immediately when switching playlists. I wish this was more obvious, because it's been a frustrating couple of weeks. Especially the I hit the add to queue by accident.
I have tried all the above and can't seem to find a remedy. Has anything been resolved through Spotify?
Disclaimer: This has nothing whatsoever to do with smart shuffle.
Another song has just appeared on my playlist. Its by Joey **bleep** and I do listen to him and have him on my playlist, but I never added this specific song to my playlist. What is going on?!
the same thing is happening to me. It is so confusing but I think downloading the playlist fixes it. Annoying fix but a fix nonetheless.
It's ridiculous how Spotify tries to force people to subscribe to its premium plans. You try to turn off the shuffling thing and it's only possible for premium users, which means you don't get to listen to what you want unless you pay for a premium subscription. If you're a free user, you have to listen to whatever song they think you should listen to, even though it's in none of your playlists. I'll say it again: It's RIDICULOUS!
Found a fix.
This happened to me. One random my Spotify would suddenly play random songs irrespective of which playlist I would select or add to queue. It wouldn't play the songs added to queue as well unless I manually clicked on a song.
The Fix: Simple. I updated Spotify app. It still was acting the same
Secondly, I installed the app and reinstalled completely with all my offline downloaded music getting deleted. And viola, it was back to normal.
I am having same problem and it just started right after the latest IOS upgrade. I am a Premium member, shuffle is greyed out, Autoay is toggled off. Please help as I curate playlists for my pilates and yoga classes and this is an issue as I cannot use my playlists now because it keeps playing random songs and not even songs of genres I listen to.
I have tried everything mentioned here and other places on the internet I am going to start looking at a different music service as this is super irritating. And clearly, I am not the only person who doesn't like getting their play list filled with random music they didn't choose. When I am in the mood for random stuff, I don't choose my playlist I choose a Spotify Playlist.
I will be doing the same - None of the suggestions works. This is a MAJOR bug in the Spotify app - Central purpose of a music app is to queue and play songs YOU elect to play. To have this ignored and the app play random **bleep** renders it inoperable. I will fire up my Amazon Prime included music app I think. I am giving up on Spotify.

Hey there @CakeholeAU,
Thanks for your reply here and for all the info you kindly added.
We understand where you're coming from, but we'd like to double-check, have you tried what @Proctone mentioned here? If you haven't, we'd suggest you give it a try to see how it goes.
As mentioned previously in this thread, there are other thing you can double-check:
If the above doesn't do the trick, it'd be awesome if you could send here more info about the speaker you're using.
Keep us in the loop!
Aleja, appreciate the fast response. I confirm I do not have Shuffle or Smart Shuffle turned on - I do however have a lot of songs in queue but when I follow the guidance you referred me to here to clear, I see no 'Clear' option to empty the queue - Refer screenshot. Also the random songs that play are not from the queue
Hey @CakeholeAU,
Thanks for the reply!
The "Clear" button becomes visible only when you manually add songs to what is currently playing. It looks like the Liked Songs playlist is the only "item" in the queue in the screenshot, which is why the button is not visible for you 🙂
This aside however, could you let us know what your speaker is (brand + model) and if the issue persists only when you're connecting to it? If so, does it happen only with a Bluetooth connection or when you play via Wi-Fi as well (using the Connect feature)?
I'm asking this because we currently have an issue under investigation, where the playlist order reverses once playback is switched to an external speaker. When this occurs, the playback will either stop after the first song or you will begin hearing suggested songs, depending on whether or not your Autoplay setting is toggled on.
Note that, if you're using an Amazon speaker, the Amazon app has a similar feature as well. You can go to More > Music and More > Settings > Autoplay to disable it.
Hopefully this will bring us more clarity into what's going on. Keep us posted 🙌🏼
Hey @CakeholeAU,
Thanks for the additional info.
To further narrow this down, can you try any of the following:
It would also be really helpful if you could send us a video or a few screenshots showing the contents of the playlist and how the queue looks like when a song that's not in it is playing.
Appreciate your cooperation in this!
