Sync ipod without itunes

I just downloaded Spotify Premium., set up my first playlist, made it local, and now want to sync to my ipod nano. the nano appears in devices, but when I click it, it says"Your ipod needs to be restored. To sync with Spotify please restore and set up your ipod in itunes". Internet search tells me that the need to use itunes was eliminated in 2011,and that when I click the ipod under devices, it should say "Sync this ipod with Spotify". I don't have itunes and dont want to install it.
