Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

As of Spotify 8.9.xx and newer I can't control the volume on my iPhone when casting to a Chromecast device. I need to go into the slider inside the Spotify app to change the volume.

This is not an iOS or apple issue:

My non working version of Spotify is 8.9.16.556 and just today updated to 8.9.18.xx which has the same bug.

On another iPhone a WORKING version of Spotify is 8.9.14.526

The latter works perfectly fine. It is not a iOS problem but a Spotify bug!

Both iPhones run iOS 17.3.1

If this is not being actively solved by Spotify I'm sorry to say I will cancel my subscription and change to Tidal. This is a CORE functionality.

This is crazy. This feature has worked for years, can’t believe 17.4 literally broke the ability for me to chance volume with physical buttons on my Sonos Roam.

I have also having  same problems in my apple watch series 7 with the os latest update. The volume button didn’t work by using Digital Crown.

Spotify should really change this. This is ridiculous, especially for a paying member. I am lookin to change to other streaming services

In the iOS Spotify app, while playing a song on external speakers, the device name appears at the bottom, or it is an icon that looks like the device. Tap on that and you get to a screen to select another device, but there is a volume slider at the bottom of that. This works for me, and is how I always adjust the volume now with Spotify. I like it better than before, actually.

My Question or Issue

For a few weeks now, I’ve noticed that I cannot control the volume on Spotify Connected devices and apps from my iPhone, my iPad, or my Apple Watch (paired with my iPhone):

* Spotify for Linux

* Sonos Play:3 speaker

* Open source apps like spotifyd and raspotify

Everything else works: connecting, disconnecting, pause, play…just not volume control.

In the case of the Sonos speaker, I’m on the same LAN subnet.

In the case of Spotify for Linux and the open source apps, I’m on the same VPN subnet.

Help?!?!

PS I’ve uninstalled the Spotify iPadOS app, rebooted my iPad, and re-installed the Spotify iPadOS app.

FYI I just checked and if I Spotify Connect:
* From the Spotify for iPad app

* To the Spotify for MacOS app

* On the same LAN subnet

…I cannot control the volume of the music being played on Spotify for MacOS.

This is very poor and backwards step in key functionality. Please fix. You pride yourselves on frequent updates so make this a priority!

I just updated the iOS on my iPhone to 17.4.1, and the volume buttons still work to control Spotify (usually), without manually adjusting the volume on my devices. I still have not updated my Spotify app, because we can guess what will happen - the volume control will stop working! Good luck, everyone.

My stats are now:

iPhone 13 mini + iOS 17.4.1 + Spotify 8.9.19.571 = volume buttons work

Notebook pc + Spotify 1.2.32.997.g4c6498b6 = volume buttons work

Desktop pc + Spotify 1.2.33.1039.g8ddb5918 = volume buttons work

Updated right now to iOS 17.4.1 and the button volume control seems to work again. A bit unresponsive bit they work.

I just tried and the buttons are working on my iPad Air ios17.4.1 but not my wife’s iPad Pro ios17.4.1. Both Spotify 8.9.19.571

Just deleted and reinstalled Spotify on my wife’s iPad Pro iOS 17.4.1 and glad to say the volume buttons are working again. Yay!
