Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

As of Spotify 8.9.xx and newer I can't control the volume on my iPhone when casting to a Chromecast device. I need to go into the slider inside the Spotify app to change the volume.

This is not an iOS or apple issue:

My non working version of Spotify is 8.9.16.556 and just today updated to 8.9.18.xx which has the same bug.

On another iPhone a WORKING version of Spotify is 8.9.14.526

The latter works perfectly fine. It is not a iOS problem but a Spotify bug!

Both iPhones run iOS 17.3.1

If this is not being actively solved by Spotify I'm sorry to say I will cancel my subscription and change to Tidal. This is a CORE functionality.

I agree this is a core function. Defeats the purpose of having the app if you can’t control volume and you have to walk back into the house to change volume because a song is different level than the previous one or conditions changed where you need to adjust.

Can say that 17.4.1 fixed it

Volume buttons on my 15 Pro started working again with Google Nest after updating to iOS 17.4.1 (from 17.4).

After the iOS 17.4.1 it’s working again on iPhone 13 but not on iPad Air 4. It seems it’s only been fixed for iPhones.

Hi @Maria!

Something similar happens on ios 17 and later with volume control listed below in the iphone spotify app i the lower left corner. Volume can only be controlled here when connected to external speaker systems via bluetooth or wifi solutions. When playing directly on the phone, volume can only be controlled by the physical buttons on the device and not within the app. The volume bar then goes greyed and locked until connected to a system like Sonos or similar. This is core functionality and is very annoying when not available. Can you fix this with an update?

All on this forum have done real troubleshooting and problem-solving on this app's issues, so someone should get hired at Spotify!

I have an iPad Air 4 and is working. After ios17.4.1 is installed try deleting Spotify and reinstall.

I’ve just done it, it worked.

I don't want to work at a place that keeps the level of communication at this here abysmal quality with their paying customers.

Spotify should praise themselves lucky they were the first movers when streaming took off. This kind of communication wouldn't fly today if they were new to the business.

I am using an iPhone 15 Pro Max and an Apple Watch Ultra. I have updated all the software and apps to the latest versions as well as unpairing my watch and einstalling Spotify. It only works intermittently on the watch option on Spotify.

Please help to resolve this issue. Thanks.

I forgot to mention I am also using an Airpods Pro Gen 2.

I found a convenient workaround. Download the app Volume Control Pro. You will immediately see a grid of 52 buttons that control Spotify (or probably any music app) volume on your external speakers -- in my case Sonos. The app even allows you to set default volumes for a list of apps/albums/songs/any label you create. Even better, I find that the lag when changing volume is less than when I used the iPhone volume controls, and the control is more precise.

It is so bizarre, that we pay premium for a service, where BASIC functions for music are not working (music selction, next, previus and volume control). BASICS! But we do have nice videos playing in the background, lyrics, and other quite useless stuff.

With iOS 17.4.1 this seems to be fixed for me. I have an iPhone 13 Pro, with the Spotify app latest version, 8.9.19.571. Volume buttons on the side of the phone now again adjust the music playing on my Sonos speakers, as well as on the Apple Watch when the Spotify watch app is active by turning the digital crown.

My wife is still running an older iOS and today her Spotify volume settings went haywire when opening the app, and apparently started playing a song at top volume which freaked her out.

On my iPhone SE 2023, I just updated to iOS 17.4.1.  I uninstalled and reinstalled Spotify for iOS.  I also applied a just-in update for Spotify for MacOS.

From my iPhone, I can control the volume of a Spotify Connect to Spotify for MacOS session.

When I get into the office, I'll see if I can control volume to Spotify for Linux, raspotify, and spotifyd.

Sometimes when typing messages, and you have iPhone on quiet, the volume becomes inverted!!! The quieter you put the volume the louder it becomes. BUT! We do have adjustable color smiley emojis!

I may be the only one who doesn't mind this change/bug/update. When I first used Spotify Connect with iPhone connecting to Denon AVR, I blew a pair of $3000 speakers. That's because - and it turns out this is in the fine print of my Denon owner's manual - the iPhone's 16 volume steps map directly to the Denon's 1-98 volume steps. That means each single step of iPhone volume equals just over 6 (6.125, to be precise) volume steps on the Denon. My iPhone was about 3/4 of the way up when I started Spotify Connect, so that made my Denon turn on at 74 despite my previously set maximum of 70. I just use my denon volume remote to turn it up, and I'm fine with that.

Still can’t change the volume on my iPhone from my Apple Watch.

It does work using Spotify Connect to my iMac though.

ill just stick to using Now Playing for the timebeing.

Another problem that i have been dealing with, is that i cant control the volume with the crown anymore like on watch Os 9, is irritating and feels like a downgrade

iOS 17.4.1
WatchOS 10.4

Turning the Digital Crown does not adjust the volume when connected to iPhone. Works when connected to MacBook, or when playing from watch.

Troubleshooting:
Re-paired watch
Re-installed Spotify on iPhone
Restarted iPhone
Reset Apple Watch
Changed Bluetooth devices

None of these has resolved the issue.
