Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

As of Spotify 8.9.xx and newer I can't control the volume on my iPhone when casting to a Chromecast device. I need to go into the slider inside the Spotify app to change the volume.

This is not an iOS or apple issue:

My non working version of Spotify is 8.9.16.556 and just today updated to 8.9.18.xx which has the same bug.

On another iPhone a WORKING version of Spotify is 8.9.14.526

The latter works perfectly fine. It is not a iOS problem but a Spotify bug!

Both iPhones run iOS 17.3.1

If this is not being actively solved by Spotify I'm sorry to say I will cancel my subscription and change to Tidal. This is a CORE functionality.

It works perfectly now after the Spotify 8.9.44 release. Thank you everyone for replying here and making some noise about this issue. Thank you Spotify for the fix.

Another plus one for working on 8.9.44. Whether it be because they listened to us or just noticed, I’m glad it finally works again!  So unusual for un-enshittification to happen these days lol but glad it has in this case. Core functionality regained. Album artwork still flickers with volume change for some reason but hey, at least the volume control works.

And this just goes to show that moderators really shouldn’t be answering any technical questions since they clearly don’t know.

Excellent news re the volume control!

Seriously Spotify?

I mean I’m so glad they fixed it but the official response is still “due to apple it’s not working”

What is this?

Thanks all for the news. As everyone is saying, communicating this is being worked on would be appreciated and so easy, instead of blaming Apple, etc.

It's funny how one needs to go into the app, click around to get the update, without the update being listed. But maybe there's a delay in the Apple app store, for when updates are listed?

I'll enjoy the restored iPhone volume function while I can.

Can confirm 8.9.44 works again.

See you all again next time it breaks 🙂

Same problem here. This is an important issue that impacts user experience. Fyi.

It appears to be kinda working with the latest update 8.9.44. However Album artwork still flickers with volume change for some reason, as mentioned by another user. Please complete fix this aswell.

Are you sure?

App updated (8.9.44.362) but the issue is still present with my Denon AVR-X1600H

With my Denon 2700H it’s working again

Sometimes it works others don't.

I don't understand 🤔😞

I have the same problem. Tried the suggested fix but it did not fix the problem. Any other suggestions.

Yes, it’s finally working on iOS version 17.5.1 on Spotify version 8.9.44.362!!! I’m able to control the volume on my iPhone’s physical volume up/down buttons even when my phone is locked. Finally back to the way it was. Please don’t break again! This was such an annoying issue. Glad it’s fixed. I was so close to canceling my Spotify premium subscription. Just in time but it took a long time for a fix.

I’m happy it’s working on iOS 8.9.44 but it still doesn’t work on iOS 17.5.1.
UPDATE: It’s working again on Spotify version 8.9.44.362. Finally!!!

It does with me. 17.5.1

you just have to update spotify

Whoa!!! The volume on my Sonos speaker just went up to maximum on its own. Scared the **bleep** out of me and I’m sure my neighbours didn’t appreciate that. Anyone else have this issue or should I start a new thread?

That worked for me! Volume co control on my iPhone while using Spotify with wireless speakers fully functioning again 🙏🏽

Everyone, remember to disable your auto updates now that it’s fixed. Dont wanna risk this being messed with again…
