iPhone heavy battery drain

iPhone heavy battery drain

Plan

Device

iPhone 12

Operating System

iOS 15.3.1 - Spotify version 8.7.12.1688

I've recently swapped to an iphone 12 from my iphone SE 2020, on that device I did not notice this kind of an issue, but on this device, spotify is heavily draining my battery in the background while im just listening to music on it on my PC.

I've disabled background app refresh - did not fix it

I've restarted my phone multiple times - did not fix it

I've reinstalled the app multiple times - it fixes it temporarly until I start listening to music on my phone then switch back to PC

I've reset my phone to factory default, reinstalled the app and still the same behavior.

Any other solutions please? It's getting tiring to reinstall the app every day.

Hey @CookieNite,

Thanks for reaching out about this in the Community and for the details you've submitted.

Can you try testing if this battery drain occurs when listening to music on WiFi and on mobile data, and if it occurs when listening to music only on your phone, without the PC app being active.

Looing forward to your reply.

Hi Alex, it occurs on both WiFi/mobile data but only while listening on another device, which for me is most of the time.

Hey @CookieNite,

Thanks for letting us know.

We suggest that you log out of the app > toggle the Background app refresh option off > then toggle it back on > restart the device > then log back in.

If this doesn't do the trick, you mentioned that you've already reinstalled the app, but would you mind going through the steps of a clean reinstall, as it's more thorough than a normal one?

If the issue still persists afterwards, would you mind asking a friend or a relative to log in to their account in your iPhone to check if the issue persists with a different account?

Keep us posted.

Hey Eni,

As I've mentioned in my original post, the "clean uninstall" was already performed when I've erased all the data on my iPhone and it was reset to factory default, so that's out of the way.

Issue still persisted with someone else's account, but now iOS 15.4 has rolled out and supposedly it's supposed to offer better battery life so I'm gonna observe if anything changes, if it does I will either reply here or create another thread.

The only thing I do still see as an issue, is that it seems the mobile app is somehow playing the music at the same time as my PC is, even with the background refresh turned off exactly the way you've suggested, because as I've mentioned, this issue seems to not be happening on my 2020 SE which is running the same versions of iOS(15.3.1, will be updating it to 15.4 shortly) and spotify, so it's something related to the iPhone 12.

So it's been a few days now that iOS 15.4 is out and there's also been a spotify update to version 8.7.14.807, with the background app refresh turned off, the battery drain seems to be fixed, so maybe its a combination of both iOS and spotify fixing issues on their respective sides in regards to battery drain as I know 15.3.1 was extremely bad for battery life.

If anyone else is running into the same issue I recommend updating both iOS and spotify to fix it.

Hey @CookieNite,

Thanks for keeping us posted 🙂

Glad to hear that it worked out and there is no longer battery drain.
