My Question or Issue

Today, I was forced to reset my password by Spotify. They logged me out of my account and they sent me my E-Mail.

"To protect your Spotify account, we've reset your password due to detected suspicious activity."

What suspicious activity? There has been no suspicious activity on my account. They didn't even explain exactly what I did. They were just vague about it. When I went to change my password, Spotify wouldn't let me change it back to my old password, so I have to get used to a new password.

Has this happened to any of you? Is there any way to get Spotify to change my password back to my original password or do I have to create a new account to use my old password?

Hey @JasonPotter,

Thanks for reaching out about this in the Community.

We can confirm that VPNs can cause issues such as the one you had experienced. They can mask the real IP address and device that is being used to access your account. Usually a VPN also switches between multiple IPs from different locations.

A lot of sites and services will either block known VPN IPs or can be a reason to trigger security protocols based on location and device access. In other words, using a VPN can make the security system think that your account is being accessed by multiple unknown locations, which in turn would trigger an automated password reset to your account.

Spotify does not currently block VPN usage, but we also do not support it and we can't guarantee that the service would work as expected when using one.

In case you're encountering account issues with changing your details, you can reach out to our support folks backstage and they'll take a look at things for you. Hope this helps!

Really anoying issue. I have my password reseted every time I go to work in the office. Probably due to work VPN being different from the one I use at home, but it's always the same pc... No reason at all to block the access.

Has anyone found a solution or have the account stable now? Can see just people complaining, no solutions.

Yes. Today spotify has logged me out twice and both times I had to make a new password. It's quite annoying especially since I have terrible memory and will have trouble remembering the password.

f_kcing **bleep** - if spotify forces another password reset I'm leaving

ANY other service at least asks for user confirmation first if they don't have clear evidence or complaints the account was compromised. THE WAY SPOTIFY HANDLES IT IS BULL__IT.

On another occasion, they reset my password 3 times within 15 minutes - WHAT'S THE F_C_ING POINT???

Every time this happens all devices are logged out. Their false positives regarding suspicious activity are through the roof and they still force this inconvenience on users for no good reason.

Guys there is a solution but it needs some stubbornness. I wrote long time ago in this thread already:

I'm convinced that Spotify also has some stupid AI in the background analyzing our behavior and then seems to decide from this whether it was "suspicious" in any way ...

I WISH it was AI so it would actually learn usage patterns and improve over time. Betting 100 bucks what they have running is just a static dumb logic.

Yet again I had this "Password Reset Due To "Suspicious Activity" like 100th time, but with a great bonus. I changed the password and now I can't log in on my android device. Way to go Spotify. Well, I can always use Deezer. It works just fine.

Thanks fxxking spotify to force reset my password, and I'm leaving too.

Also recently dealing with this issue as a paid premium user with Android, Chrome OS, and Windows and never got a clear response from 2 different support reps as to why this keeps happening.  It stopped for 1-3 weeks after changing my email address, which I've now done 3 times.  I know my latest email is not compromised, and the same devices and non-VPN networks are being used.  A rep from Spotify posted an explanation in this thread: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Accounts/Please-stop-asking-me-to-reset-the-password-every-week/td-... Given it seems Spotify is unwilling to correct issues with their wonky security algorithm, I am  moving my data elsewhere for the time being, as this is not acceptable.  I should not have paid service interrupted so often if there is not a legitimate security-related reason to do so, especially if I'm abiding by their terms of service.

Also interesting that every time I post on r/Truespotify about this issue, the mods delete my contributions.

Yep, still not fixed. Password keeps getting reset with out my permission - being triggered by work VPN and they think my account is being accessed in another country. Wasted hour on LIVE CHAT support just ended up with an apology. Total **bleep** -  they should be asking users to verify the activity instead of just kicking you out and telling you to reset your password (even Google asks you to verify your activity before taking action and I think they are security Nazi's!!). Next unauthorised password reset and its off to Amazon Music or similar for me.

Currently I'm at password reset 27. Signed out everywhere, removed all applications, changed e-mailadress... One week later, another password reset. This AI is really stupid, the helpdesk can't even tell me what actually causes the suspicious activity. Please stop asking for a password reset!

something people seem to not have touched on is that this issue implies that spotify is *still storing password hashes after resetting it*

I have the same problem, i go one day per week to the office and login to spotify there, a few hours later my account is locked and i'm forced to reset the password 😞

I just had the same thing happen to me. It is unbelievable how poorly this system is managed. On top of being randomly kicked out of your account (not using a VPN) the app straight up inhibits you from accessing all features premium has to offer. I can't even begin to explain how many times I've been forced to go online despite having all of my playlists downloaded.

Premium means jack because one of the main features - to download music and podcasts - randomly becomes nonfunctional and straight up forces you to go online even though I may or may not even have access to mobile internet at the time. Sometimes it loads in downloaded playlists that I haven't listened to in months but refuse to loads in the ones I listened to yesterday (they're all downloaded). This has been a terrible experience and I'm on the verge of switching to Tidal entirely.

I also can't believe there aren't IDs for individual artists, which means that anybody can upload songs to someone else's account under the same name. It's f***ing ridiculously dumb!

When writing this comment, Spotify spammed me with popups to let them know what I think about them.

Whatever thoughts I have about you - you don't wanna hear it.

Happens to me Everytime I have time to actually change around my playlist. I can't so it while ime working 7 days a week cause I'm too tired and want to just rest and listen to music when I get home. I had the last three days off and added a ton of music to  my playlist. Everytime I do this is when I get the message and I'm running short on password ideas. Spotify PLEASE stop this nonsense their support is useless they don't care about the users concerns otherwise this issue would've been fixed years ago

Presently close to 1 week into email conversation with Spotify Support about this ongoing password reset issue that, per prior posts here, has been present since at least 2019.  My customer service experience has been unsatisfactory overall.  Explanations from the first group of email support reps differed with them providing general copy/paste info from FAQs as opposed to collaborating toward a clear means of preventing future arbitrary password resets.  The first support rep to respond actually reset my password again, which was by no means implied or requested and extremely aggravating.  Other reps referenced everything from alleged unauthorized downloads to speculating about me changing my email address causing the password resets, the latter of which was actually a problem solving step suggested by a prior Spotify support chat rep and last done months ago.  I requested that this issue be escalated multiple times before their replies became less frequent and copy/paste FAQ info replies resumed for multiple email cycles as opposed to actually acknowledging my request.  Since the point my inquiry was reportedly escalated to the highest level, it took 2 email cycles before there was a response to questions about any device and data limits with there reportedly being none. They now keep reiterating I should be only using one device every few days as a troubleshooting step, which seems like an effort to deter me until enough time lapses in their system for my request to be automatically marked as resolved.  Reps at the highest level have also keep referencing no ability to change related security algorithm behavior, though also not demonstrating willingness to communicate with parties who can.  Hope this info leads others facing the same issue to make an informed decision about continued use of Spotify.

(TimothyCrentist here, I had to create a new profile, because the old one does not work anymore. Probably some "suspicious activity" ...)

I "solved" the problem. I went to my account and located the button that says "CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION". They tried to scared me by showing me big numbers and what I'll miss. Boo-hoo. Money is the only thing these companies understand and I'm not giving Spotify another dollar. After several years I'm done with**bleep**. And as bonus - I'm not giving money also to Joe Rogan.

For anyone interested, I used TuneMyMusic for transferring all the songs and playlists. From 1500+ songs only like 20 was not recognized and they were quite obscure one, so I'm not surprised. The whole setup cost me 5$ and 20minutes for 2 accounts (I had Spotify DUO). Really seamless. There are different services. I heard also Playlisty for iOS is great.

If they do this again I leave. Specify what the issue is.

This just happend to me again at the worst possible time.

FU Spotify.
