Someone used my email by mistake due to a typo. Can I delete their account to create my own?

Solved!

Someone used my email by mistake due to a typo. Can I delete their account to create my own?

This morning I tried to set up a Spotify account. I was sure I never had one before. However, I was told my email was already in use. I went through the steps to "change my password" -- that worked fine, even though I was sure I didn't have an account.

Then, I went to look at my account. The user name on the account was similar to the first part of my email address, one digit different, and I learned I'm a 19 year old guy in Chicago with Spotify linked to a Playstation (none of those things are true).

I think what happened is this person set up his account, and made a typo, using my email address by mistake. I would like to create my own new account with my own (correct) information, but I'm not sure how, other than to delete this person's account.

I also don't know if I can delete his account, and then start my own from scratch, or if it will have me with all his old information again.

Help? Thanks.

I hope this helps!

Hello @user-removed!

I'd recommend heading here if you want to your account. You can always change your email address from your Spotify account page.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with!

Hi, and thanks for the reply! Well, this is what I was afraid would happen and was trying to avoid -- I already saw that general information, but I wanted to know about my particular situation, which is not addressed on that help page.

1. I tried to change the email address to my best guess of what the guy's email address was. (Guessing from the typo.) I couldn't do that because "the email is already in use." So maybe eventually he went and created one with his correct address.

2. So then I tried to delete the account. I guess I was successful. However, then I tried to create my account with my email address, and it said THAT was in use, even though I deleted the other account.

So I went ahead and made the problem worse. 😕

Thank you! Yes I should contact them. I was looking for that yesterday but
