My Question or Issue

When connecting Spotify to a speaker with built-in "Spotify Connect" and built-in "Chromecast" you can switch between these two modes". When using "Chromecast" the volumesteps are "+1" or "-1" when hitting the volume-buttons. When using "Spotify Connect" the steps vary from 2-3 each time when you hit the buttons wich are much to big and the volume tends to be too highh or too low.

Yes, I did a clean install, cleared all caches, restarted router, phone, speaker.

I have the same issue with Marantz Melody CR612 and it makes me crazy. Why are the volume increments simply normally in 1 steps instead of 5??? Please fix it! I do like Spotify (duo licence with my son) but this is a serious issue and I wonder that it hasn't been fixed for years!

They will not fix it and they will have lossless audio in 10 years or so. Thinking about moving to Qobuz. That's probably the only thing they understand.

HALOOOO is Spotify listening to this issue anyhow??!!

This is still a problem.

I moved to Tidal and everything works smoothly. Too bad I waited so long but now I am even happier.

Just to bump the discussion again, this really needs fixing! Other providers and small apps built by enthusiasts have way better volume control. They provide small steps and the option to choose bigger steps. It's way easier to hold a button with small steps then to have to volume jump too high with a few clicks

Guys, I don't understand why you're all so upset about this - They're always looking for new ways to improve and have made sure to pass this info on to the relevant team 😂

Just want to add my support for this potential change. It's way too course, especially when used with the more beefy audio amps. Would expect it to work in steps of 3dBA or similar instead.

My Question or Issue

Sins a few days the volume control is a bit off. Usually the volume steps where +/- 1 dB. But now tha's +/- 4 dB. Which is far to big of a step to control the volume.

Can't find a setting in the app or the amplifier to set the steps. Is this an issue more of you have experience the last couple of days?

Could this be a bug in a new release of the app?

Thans in advance for your help.

I second this. It would be very nice to be able to change this as a user (or default it to +-1) because for many devices (incl. my Samsung soundbar) the steps are just way too large. And of course I could just change it on the remote of the soundbar, but that would be the sole reason to use that remote (since everything else is handled by the tv remote when watching TV or other media). In short it's cumbersome.

I hope that some time can be devoted to this subject. Thanks in advance.
PS: I've tried other solutions like making the steps on my android phone more gradual, but unfortunately that does not work with cast media, so there does not seem to be a very straight forward solution for this.

Just absurd. I use spotify with a marantz receiver in zone 2, so normal remote cannot be used, and steps from the app are 6 db each (0.5 db via remote) - but it seems that nobody from spotify is checking these messages. Three years and no fix? Maybe they actually have no dev team, only one employee assisted by AI?  :))

This bug is older than AI that can code 🙂

I'd guess this one here is just no longer "on the agenda" / flagged or however they may justify not checking on posts here anymore.

Does anyone know how to ping a moderator? This remains to be such a nuissance.

Hey everyone,

Thank you for the reports!

We've passed your comments to our tech folks so they can have another look into this. To aid us in the investigation, could you share the following info, if you haven't already:

  • The devices you're using, including make, model, OS and firmware version.
  • The exact version of Spotify you're running
  • Does this happen over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or both?
  • Does changing the audio quality (for example from Lossless to Very high, or vice-versa) have any effect?

In the meantime, make sure to keep the app updated so you don't miss a thing.

Take care.

Please read the thread carefully, you have all the data there already. The problem is mostly with how the Spotify UX (for sure for both electron and iOS, i think also Android) handles the volume change. This happens on a broad range of devices - mine is Denon PMA-900HNE (firmware up to date) but other users report the same behaviour for other brands also. The API provides enough resolution but the steps offered by UI (slider and buttons) are way too big and the maximum level of volume is never a desired value on these devices.

This volume step issue effects pretty much every typical / medium / high end amplifier you can buy at BestBuy with the exception of Sonos. However, Sonos rarely connects properly when using it through the Spotify app so that's a whole other issue.

I have been at so many people's houses that have this issue. Most people just end up using the physical volume knob, but its such an avoidable problem.

Also having the exact same problem since a reset of my soundbar two days ago.. normally Google Cast was +5db, and Spotify Connect was normal (+1). Now Spotify Connect is also doing +4 all the time.. cleared and uninstalled Spotify, Samsung SmartThings and Google Home app, factory reset soundbar and did a clean setup, issue still persists..

I have a Samsung Q950A, two years old. Everything worked just fine till a few days ago..

There is a lot of info in the thread but for what it's worth:

Denon x3800H amplifier

Spotify connect via WiFi

With all Spotify versions I have had these big volume steps

Android app of Spotify on Pixel 8

Always on latest update and firmware also for the Denon

Please note this is specifically Spotify connect and not casting or bluetooth

Ah, yes let me provide my firmware and device info as well:

Pixel 9 with Android 16
Spotify App version 9.1.6.1145

Google Cast was already giving me 5db steps, but now Spotify Connect also have steps of 4db instead of just 1db

One more more addition: Whenever I start Spotify (Windows app) and connect to my streaming amp the volume is way too high and I have to jump to the device and move the volume down before it wakes the neighbors. Simple solution: store the last Volume setting per device.
