My Question or Issue

At night, I use Spotify to "Cast" to a Google Home Mini in my daughter's room which works as expected. The problem that I have is that when I go to bed, a few hours later, and connect my Bluetooth headphones to my phone, Spotify automatically switches to playing out of my headphones, even without the app running in the foreground. What is worse, is that the speaker then starts talking about how it cannot continue because the account is in use elsewhere which, given my daughter is asleep, is not good!

I am not intending to listen to Spotify on my headphones, I just want to listed to some podcasts using another app which makes this incredibly frustrating.

I can see how this could be useful in some situations but in my use case it is most definitely not.

Is this intended functionality?

Is there any way to stop this behaviour?

Re #4: maybe it’s cause I’m in the beta testing group. What we were in both the alpha and omega testing groups 🤔

I've devised a temporary solution coping strategy. I created a whole house spotify account as part of my family plan and a chrome profile signed in to the whole house google account. When I need my phone to be completely unaware of the playback happening on the baby's speaker, I play music from that account and control it from a chrome window.

This is not a solution. But it avoids naptime checkmate while I'm trying to work.

PLEASE don't let this die. I'll do anything.

Hey folks!

We thank you for your patience with this issue and would encourage you to try the steps mentioned in this thread.
In the meantime, as a workaround you may also try the following:

  1. Start playback on the speaker using a voice command (you do not need the actual app open for this)
  2. With Spotify closed (in the background as well), connect your Bluetooth headphones

Doing things this way should prevent your headphones from taking over the playback 🙂
Thanks!

I'm reviving a stale thread here because it's#1 on Google on my search, and because it's doesn't have a resolution from either Spotify or some of the users in the thread.

So here's my take:

I'm playing music via Spotify on my tv via a Chromecast adapter. As soon as I turn on my Bluetooth earbuds, playback changes to my earbuds.

I don't get any lost connection message and the sound plays from my earbuds, not the phone speaker, but it's still annoying.

It's clearly a setting or by design of either Spotify, Android, Bluetooth codec makers or my earbud makers. I can't find any settings anywhere. So let's start at Spotify.

Please, developers at Spotify, can you confirm or deny that the code somewhere inside Spotify app reacts to a new Bluetooth connected headset and switches playback to this new device? Yes or no?

My specs:

Phone: Google Pixel 7 Pro

Android 15 fully updated, security update of 2025-05-05, system update of 2025-04-01 , core version 6.1.99-android14-11-gd7dac4b14270-ab12946699 #1 Tue Jan 21 13:39:43 UTC 2025

1. april 2025

Spotify: 9.0.50.416

Best regards
