Notifications cutting out music

Whenever I play music and receive a notification, the music dips down in volume, or cuts out completely. That is seriously annoying. I'm reading from a Google search that the only way to correct that is to turn on Do Not Disturb, on my phone, and then turn off when I am done with Spotify. Really? I'm hoping this is not true as Poweramp has a feature that ignores incoming notifications. 

It's 2017. I'm a DevOps Engineer, so I know all about automation. There's no reason to force someone to manually turn things on and off when it comes to this type of application.

I have ended up using the do not disturb feature....but when it's fully
enabled, Spotify wont play music through Bluetooth. So i have to mess with
the settings each time. Really annoying. Also... the volume on Spotify is
much lower than the mp3's stored on my phone. In my car, I have the volume
maxed out. 😞
