latest Android app randomly stops playback

latest Android app randomly stops playback

Hi -- I'm running the latest Android app on a Galaxy Nexus (GSM) with (stock) Android 4.0.4, and Spotify is frequently stopping playback for no apparent reason. The "currently-playing" track will stay in the notification bar as if it's stil playing, but the Spotify app will show no song playing. I can generally restart playback by tapping a song in the app, but sometimes I have to restart the phone before playback will resume.

Is anyone else seeing this behavior? It's making Spotify unusable.

Yes, same problem for me. It's completely unusable. And it happens on Wifi too.

Really not good enough. I'm paying for this and if Spotify don't contact us with a resolution soon then I'm going to end my subscription. There's plenty of good alternatives and Spotify has a very slim advantage, this will negate that advantage for me.

Really hoping that they respond to this because I'd like to keep using it.

Edit: Gapless playback and crossfade are both switched off.

Just wanted to thorow something  out there.  I realized after I made a post in this thread that my problem was not related to the app at all.  I had a defective headphone cable, and sometimes when it was jiggled the wrong way it would break the connection just long enough for the phone to detect it.  It is the default behavior on my phone to stop playback when the headphones are disconnected.  So the bad wire was causing all of the sudden stops.  Try out a different set of headphones if you think this might be the problem.

Definitely not what's happening in my case. Headphones are brand new and problem still happens using the speaker.

i had this issue on my nexus s for sprint last year.

i was thinking at first it was my really crappy 3g but it would do the same thing on wifi
at home, work, public places too.
found the only solution that sometimes works is not turning the screen off

i recently upgraded to a nexus 4 AND STILL the problem not only persists but is increasingly rampant
i have been so frustrated that even with a fast 4g connection or on a home 50mbs DL connection IT STILL PAUSES/FREEZES!!!!
please oh please someone from spotify say something about the issue and its killing me.
i really enjoy your service but this might be tha last month i pay for spotify

This is clearly nothing to do with headphones, speakers or anything else. When running with NO NETWORK connection I have repeated notifications that my account is in use somewhere else and music is paused. Given there is NO NETWORK connection, it's clearly not possible for the app to determine this, even if it were the case, which it isn't.  This is when listening to locally downloaded playlists . . . so something is clearly broken in the app. Strangely this seems more apparent on some tracks than others and this is repeatable. Also noted that as soon as the app starts playing this game no audio is played despite the player suggesting on the GUI it's playing something. Usually skipping to the next track and back again solves this, but not always.

Same here. HTC One X. I have a premium subscription.

I see spotify loses internet connection, although my wifi is working fine and I can browse web without problem. Does not happen on a desktop version.

I'm really contemplating canceling early. Wanted to stick through the rest of my month but it just won't work.
Stop play
Stop play
Makes me feel like I'm living in 2005 waiting for things to buffer.
50mb DL speeds on my wifi and my 4g gets a solid 10mb at work and home.
This is definitely not a connection issue on my end.

Unfortunately, this was happening to me so often that it became unusable. Spotify for my iPhone was perfect, but I recently got a new Galaxy S4 with AT&T (running Android 4.2.2) and I almost immedietly noticed this problem with the Android app.

After about 5 consecutive songs or so, it would just stop and there was nothing I could do to get it started again besides killing the app and restarting it. I use streaming music mainly in my car because of my long commute to work, and I couldn't keep doing that for safety purposes, so I just had to cancel my premium subscription to Spotify.

I've since switched to Google's new competition for this reason, and their app doesn't have this problem, so it seems I'll be staying with them. Really a shame 😕

Same issue here. The app either randomly stops playing and resumes after about 20 seconds or skips to the next track.

I assumed this was an issue with my Droid X and an ancient OS, but from the posts in this thread, it appears to be a univeral issue.

I'm a new subscriber looking for an alternative to MOG which definitely has its own, special problems.

So far, I'm unimpressed.

It's almost frustrating enough to switch to an iPhone [pukes in mouth a little]

I think I have the same problem on my huawei g510 with android 4.1.1 . When this bug started it made the app usless, that I had used for like 2 years.

Found this little gem: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/mobile/android-devices/22ZLo6_Bxnw

I uninstalled Google Listen and the issue seems to have vanished (fingers crossed). Probably not the fix in every case, but hopefully it helps someone.

This problem just started for me as well on my Galaxy S4. I cleared out all open applications using Task Manager and that resolved the problem. Must be an app conflict.

I've been having this happen to me. It's happened several times when task manager shows Spotify as the only running app, and I don't have Google listen installed.

Also, I know it isn't my headphones. For one thing, if I pull my headphones out the Spotify notification will stay. When it just randomly stops the notification disappears. Plus no amount of wiggle or jiggle replicates the error.

What's most frustrating for me is that it often happens while riding my motorcycle. It happens all the time at home too, but I can't exactly pull my phone out and restart my music while riding unless I pull to a stop and take off my gloves. Really frustrating. It's been working fine for months now, and I haven't installed any new apps. Ugh

I don't see a way to edit my post, but I wanted to mention that most of my listening is done with downloaded songs on my phone. I never listen to the radio feature on my bike or in my car due to spotty coverage.

Actually I've just thought of something. I can't remember if it's done it while playing radio on my phone, but I know it does it with my downloaded playlists. Most of them have songs synced from my computer. Could that be it? It shouldn't matter since they're down loaded to my phone, but it's all I can think of.

Could you see if you get this happening when streaming spotify content rather than playing downloaded music the next time you have wifi access. If it works fine streaming, then it could indicate an issue with the spotify cache on your mobile.

Happening to me quite a bit over the last few weeks...

Playlist stops playing between songs - the notification controls disappear - I have to go back into Spotify and manually hit the Play button - I do notice a "Connection to Spotify" error message, even though wifi and 3G inidicators are good.

What's annoying is this happens on offline playlists 😞

Hi. If it only happens with offline playlists, try deleting the spotify cache and resynching. It also seems possible that killing the Google Listen service may help, as mentioned by @f1lterrr above.

After tryiing every setting imagineable, disabling the equalizer finally fixed this problem for me. Re-enabling the equalizer creates the problem again. Others seem to have luck with other things, but I would try disabling the equalizer and see what happens.

Same problem here on my Samsung Galaxy S6 where at least once a day the app with spontaneously stop.  When I go to my lock screen, Spotify is no longer there.  I have to unlock my phone, to which then the spotify app appears just fine.  I press the play button and it starts the song over again.

same to me since the previous or the one older update. Operating system was not updated, it's the most uptodate one. Nexus 5 with Android 6.0. It's so bad as in my car it's not too easy to continue playback after this issue happens...
