Couldn't update, now I can't reinstall

Couldn't update, now I can't reinstall

Hey,

In the last couple of weeks Spotify kept failing at updating. Everytime I started it, it gave it a try, failed and gave an error (it started normally though afterwards). So now I tried to reinstall to see if it solves the problem, but now it won't even install. I downloaded the installer, it didn't even want to start. I moved the installer to a different directory, now it starts, downloads, but after downloading nothing happens, it won't install, it just quits. I tried an old installer, something from 2014, hoping it will install and I can patch it up, it installed perfectly and runs, but now it doesn't want to upgrade.

Win10 64 bit

PS: icing on the cake is that if I try to start the installer as an administrator, which very often solves similar issues, then it straightup tells me to ditch the admin privileges and try it normally, without being an admin. This is probably a world's first, well done...

Hi there,

I recommend you to try installing the Spotify directly from the Windows Store app.

It's available here.

If that doesn't work, please, let me know!

Thank you 🙂

I get an error that it couldn't install.

This issue seems to be with usernames that contain special characters.

You need to create a new temporary folder in C:\(outside the 'Users' folder), put there the installer file and run it from there.

The full installer could help too: http://download.spotify.com/SpotifyFullSetup.exe

Relocating the installer to C:\ is what I did that made the installer download Spotify, however like I said it failed to install it after downloading it.

The full installer you've linked installed properly, but it still fails to upgrade to the newest version (it's on 1.0.95, 1.0.96 available, but when I restart to install it, the "Spotify Updater wasn't able to start properly" as the error says). So I'm back to where I started from.

I'm sorry but this is an ongoing issue.

Please check out this Status Update page for more information. 😉

this issue is still happening unfortunately

Hi @InstallationCharacte,

Thank you for posting in this thread.

We haven't received any other recent reports about this, so this is probably an isolated issue that we can sort out with some troubleshooting.

Could you log out of your account, then restart your computer, log in again and check if you're able to update the app again?

If it doesn't do the trick, we suggest you run a clean reinstall of the app, as this one is more thorough than a regular one and can be helpful to get rid of any cache or old files that might be causing trouble.

Let us know how this goes.

I'm attached to a domain controller that prevents execution of files from the temp directory for security concerns. When notified that spotify wont/cant run, it usually means there is an udpate. I have to update manually....

1. go to update folder and copy all files (C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Spotify\Update\spotify-update-######)

2. go to program directory and paste files. Overwrite existing files when prompted. (C:\Users\%username%\Spotify)

3. start spotify from shortcut.

This process places the update files where they need to go. It will work till the next update then repeat the process.
