My Issue

When playing a song from a playlist whose queue has finished, while shuffle is enabled and repeats are not, only that singular song will be added to the queue (no songs in "Next from: Playlist").

Previously, playing a song after the queue had finished would re-shuffle the playlist into the queue, if shuffle was enabled.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Create a playlist.
  2. Enable shuffle (not smart shuffle) and disable repeats.
  3. Click play (on either the playlist itself or one of its songs).
  4. Listen to, or skip, every song until the end is reached.
  5. Click play on one of the songs in the same playlist.
  6. That song is the only one added to the queue.

Additional details

I am using the "Fewer Repeats" version of the shuffle.

This also happens with albums.

Hey @shinobisensei,

Thanks for reaching out!

What you've shared with us doesn't seem to be consistent with the expected behavior here - when Shuffle is on and Repeat is off, once all tracks have been played through, the playlist's playback session is effectively "done." At that point, clicking a specific song should start a new playback context from that song, effectively re-queuing the entire playlist.

To get the full playlist going again, you can try hitting the play button on the playlist itself (not an individual track), which would start a fresh shuffle session as well. In case it doesn't, a workaround would be to cycle through the shuffle options until you reach the regular shuffle again. This will generate a new shuffled playback order for you.

Lastly, we'd like to ask you for your Spotify app version as well as a rough estimate of when this issue has first appeared for you.

Many thanks in advance! We'll be on the lookout for your reply 🙂

Hello, sorry for the delayed reply, the email notification got lost in spam.

Yes, clicking play again on the playlist itself does play the whole playlist again, but it plays in the same order that the previous shuffle had. Cycling the shuffle options also works (I have done this to "reset" the shuffle order in the past), but requires several more button clicks than just hitting play on a song.

I have tested this on multiple devices and platforms, and the result is always the same: clicking a song within the same playlist after all the shuffled tracks have finished playing, still only adds that one song to the queue.

Platforms:

  • Windows Desktop (version 1.2.88.483.g8aa8628e)
  • Web Player (no version info available)
  • Android Mobile (version 9.1.44.2120)

Hey @shinobisensei,

Thank you for your message!

We appreciate the detailed response you posted, along with the screenshots and the description. In order to look into that matter further, would you mind confirming if changing the Shuffle style makes any difference?

To find this option, just open your app settings and scroll down to find the Shuffle section, there you can choose between "Standard" and "Fewer repeats" styles.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

Changing from "Fewer Repeats" to "Standard" shuffle, did not change the behavior.

If there are any logs I can attach that will help debug, either from the Desktop or Web Player versions, let me know.

Hey @shinobisensei,

Hello again @shinobisensei,

Thank you for the patience while the relevant team investigated this.

After all, it seems that this is the current expected behavior. Playing a new track no longer reshuffles the queue, rather it replaces what your current track is and once you finish the last song, you will go back to the beginning as normal.

For now, we recommend following the suggested workarounds by @Vasil in this earlier post.

Thank you once again and don't hesitate to reach out to us if there's anything else we can assist you with. Take care!
