My Question or Issue

There are already a lot of threads about this. But this bug is still not fixed yet.

Podcasts always play in reverse order. (new to old)

But i want to hear them from old to new.

I can change the display order. I can also filter out the episodes i already heard. But this doesn't change anything. It still plays in reverse order, and also filtered episodes.

I already reinstalled Spotify twice. It didn't help.

Please fix this.

Yes still working for me. To try and help out I've even tested it by changing to music and back again. When I select a music album the queue automatically clears all of the podcasts and puts the music in normal running order. Then I went back to my podcast and the queue is full of the episodes in order from latest one I'm listening to right down to the last episode. The only other things I've tried in recent times are a clean install and going into the setting icon while on a podcast, then going to Manage "mark as played" and then clearing that entire list. Then manually scrolling through each episode to make it mark as played again. Once you're back to where you're up to maybe clear the queue again, then set filters to unplayed and oldest/newest depending on your preference. Then click on the current episode to play and then hopefully Spotify should order your queue correctly from then onwards. I've attached images as proof this is still working how it should for me.

FOUND THE FIX FOR THIS:

I was getting so frustrated that Spotify kept playing my podcasts in reverse order even when I had the sort/filters set to oldest and unplayed. For example I'd start episode 16 and once that episode had finished it would go onto episode 15 and then 14 etc. Even skipping tracks manually was reversed. Turns out it's the queue (accessible bottom right of now playing screen) that's causing the reverse order. Simple fix is to remove all the tracks from the queue. Will see how long this fix lasts for.

I have the same problem, and only on the Desktop version of Spotify (I use macOS). Updated to the latest version and all, so no solution appears to be in sight.

A workaround that I use is to start the podcast on my phone, and then switch over to the desktop with Spotify Connect. Then the queue has the podcasts in the right (not reverse) order. Hopefully this can help somebody while the good people at Spotify try to find time to look into our problem. 😉

Simply fix the bug guys (devs from Spotify), words won't fix it. You should feel ashamed knowing the bug and not fixing it for months in a row!  Not to mention that you should test the app before letting such an obvious bug be released.
But it's a joke, the fact it isn't solved for months like you wouldn't even care about your clients.
As a Spotify user for many years, I start to feel ashamed that I was recommending Spotify to my friends.

Instead of "heading on over to the on going issue that's provided", I'll just get a different app. There are complaints about thus going back years. It can't possibly take this long to fix this problem. This is sad and makes Spotify look amateur.

Ridiculous. Posting copy paste responses for months instead of fixing a simple bug. Complete lack of care for PAYING customers. Soon leaving Spotify if it doesn't change..

This issue persists also in Ubuntu 22.04 (Kernel: 5.15.0-40-generic) with spotify version 1.1.84.716.gc5f8b819 rev60

no matter the sorting the podcasts, not some but all, plays newest to oldest.

It's been more than half a year sice this was first mentioned in the wild, just focus on fixing it already.

Yes,   I am going to add my 2 cents to this thread!   No matter how I order the presentation of episodes in a Podcast it ALWAYS plays the Previous Podcast..  This isn't such a big deal in a song list... but its ANNOYING when playing multiple episodes in a Podcast.  When finished with an episode,  does it not make sense that you would want to hear the NEXT historical episode in a series?     So then you have to manually intervene every time to play the next!   C'mon!   This does NOT sound like rocket science!   It's just a bug in the Algorithm.   So fix it!

Still happening here on Linux and iOS and it's very annoying.

Issue persists in Spotify for Windows (1.1.91.824.g07f1e963)

Workaround is to add the next couple of podcast episodes to the queue in the correct order.

Hi there folks,

Thank you for taking the time to post here in the Community. We just came across this thread.

As mentioned earlier in this thread there's an ongoing issue about this - Podcast plays previous episode instead of the next. You can leave a +Like and Subscribe to the thread so that you don't miss any updates about this.

Let us know if we can help you with anything else in the meantime.

Take care!

Well... it's coming up on a year now. Has anyone had a couple minutes to put together a timeline when sorting in reverse order might be possible? Simple really. You already sort. Just do it the other way around. I think it takes about 15 seconds for the decision to make the decision to implement it. Maybe another 1 minute to put together a timeline when you are in a meeting for other things already, and I suspect it will take about 15 minutes maximum to program.

im on pc (havent had the problem on my phone) i only JUST ran into the issue of the podcasts going the wrong way. i got the app for ease of access but on the website podcasts go oldest to newest (the way it should be) try checking out the Spotify website and see if the podcasts are normal

So I didn't have any issues with this until I downloaded the player onto my computer, when I was using the web browser everything played fine.  Now that I have the app it isn't playing correctly on either platform.  This is VERY annoying and not the service that I am paying for.  I have no desire to listen to podcast episodes out of order or relisten to ones that I have already heard.  Please figure this out and correct it.  Obviously the "fix" at the corporate offices isn't translating to the end user based on the feedback that I am reading of this being an ongoing issue over the past several years.

I can't reply to the ongoing issues link.  I just started having this issue about a month ago when I finally downloaded the desktop app.  When I was exclusively using the web browser all of my podcasts played the way that I expected them to but since the app on both platforms they will only play in reverse.  This requires having to jump around to listen to episodes in order; I don't like to listen to them in reverse or listen to episodes that I have already heard.  I am a premium member and don't like paying for a service that isn't what it should be.  Thank you for your time.

2023, how is this still not solved???  just updated spotify again and still the same issue.

That thread says the issue was fixed back in May 2022.   This issue is absolutely not fixed.   I just updated spotify this morning on my pc and it will still only play podcasts in reverse order.   why does spotify insist on buying all the podcast companies and putting them exclusively on their own platform if they're going to give users a complete s%$t player for them.   Makes absolutely no sense.

Still happening on Linux and iOS. So definitely NOT fixed…

Having the same problem (iOS), very irritating when listening to a 300+ episode podcast-story.

I've had this issue for what feels like years at this point, through many software updates. It's truly a disservice to episodic podcasts where the story continues in one direction. Please fix this, Spotify. It happens to me on both mac iOS and desktop apps. The direction selection (old>new; new>old) is only visual and doesn't affect the play direction. It's truly maddening UX from a company that should care about that kind of thing.

ok, characteristically, right after i complain I find a workaround - it looks like there is not a wall separating play order settings between music and podcasts. E.g. I always have my liked songs list set to play newest first. So on a hunch, I changed it to oldest first (upward arrow on the date column). Clicked back to my podcast (set to oldest to newest) and it played the correct direction! I hope this helps others. Note that based on other threads, shuffle settings may also affect your podcast playback.

Now the question is, how many more years will go by until spotify dev fix it... ??
