My Question or Issue

For the last few months, I've been having issues with my queue adding songs that were already played, making it impossible to rotate through my playlist like i was able to prior. This happens to both my computer app and phone app. Before this happened, I was able to turn on shuffle and hit play, where it would cycle through the songs before ending and giving me the chance to reshuffle or hit play again. I would love to be able to cycle through my playlists like i was able to prior. I have no idea what caused this, i turned the shuffle back to standard, reinstalled the app, cleared cache and none of that helped. It only seems to happen when the app is closed out for the night or paused for a period of time.

Below are screenshots showing this -

Second one is before the app is closed out and first picture is afterwards, all songs in first were played hours prior. The is Standard Shuffle and no rotation on. Shuffle was not hit as i can find the songs that were supposed to play farther down.

Hi there, @MedicBunny

Thanks for reaching out and welcome to the Spotify Community!

In case you haven't done it yet, you can change the type of Shuffle you would like to go to once you press the Shuffle button in a playlist.

In the desktop app you can go to the upper right corner, where you see your profile image, and then click there. Once the menu comes down, you can choose the Settings option and then go down until you find the Shuffle feature. There you can pick between "fewer repeats" or "standard" (as seen in the image below):

In the mobile app go to Settings and Privacy > Playback > You can toggle on or off the "Include Smart Shuffle in play modes" option. In that same menu, you'll see the Shuffle feature and you can choose the preferred shuffle style you would like to go with:

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes!

Hello,

I have tried reverting the shuffle from fewer repeats to standard and have smart shuffle turned off. Songs are still re-adding themselves back into queue after a long period of time. Biggest issue is when I go to pick up from where i last left off, it takes anywhere from 15-30 songs that were played at the start of the shuffled playlist and repeats it, pushing the new songs farther down. Shuffle isnt hit at all during this time, it worked fine for years up until early summer, now i cant get from the beginning to the end of a shuffled playlist without it messing up 😞

Hi again, @MedicBunny

Thanks for keeping in contact!

When you close the app or stop listening, the shuffle session might reset. Upon resuming, Spotify may generate a new random order that includes songs recently played. We recommend clearing the queue every time you use the app after haven't using it for a while. Access the Now Playing screen, tap the queue icon (bottom right), and click Clear Queue to start fresh. Then, you can shuffle the playlist you want to again.

Also, try logging out of all connected devices to clear potential server-side, multi-device queue conflicts.

Keep us posted!

Okay, I'll try that out tomorrow and clear all my devices, ill let you know how it goes 🙂

It seemed to work for a day but now does the same thing again 😞 still adding songs i already listed to into the queue without any direction too. 😞

i just use the desktop app and the app on my phone, it was never an issue to switch between the two devices so im super lost now, all over items have been signed out of 😞

Hey there @MedicBunny,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop!

In this case, in order to have a more clear idea of what's happening on your side, it'd be awesome if you could send us the following:

  • A screenshot of how you see your queue before going to leave the session for a while.
  • A video recording of how you see the queue after picking up from where you last left off. It's important you record all the steps you take from that moment on. You can attach the video in your next reply in mp4 format, or upload it to YouTube or Google Drive and make it public, so we can visualize it.
  • Does this happen when playing a specific playlist?
Note: Be aware this is a public space, so please don't share any personal info on the screenshot you'll send us.

We'll be around!

Hi good evening, i was able to get the info need

I have bore the screenshot before it was closed out, the video after the app was reopened.

It seems to happen on any playlist I use, i even tried creating a new playlist as it happens to the two main ones i use and it seems to happen to any of them.

With the video, the songs that were showing in the picture are all the way at the bottom now.

Thanks for the details, @MedicBunny! We've forwarded them to our tech folks who'll take a closer look. We'd recommend keeping Spotify updated so you don't miss a thing.

The Community is just a post away should you need assistance with anything else in the meantime.

My shuffle queue keeps repeating, I will listen to music and skip a bunch with my full library on shuffle and the next day it’s the exact same queue repeated. How? This has never happened and now happens every other day for the past month, if this isn’t fixed soon I’m 100% switching to Apple Music. Shuffle is suppose to shuffle not play the same queue every day. Ive been a Spotify user for 14 years but this is driving me nuts enough to cancel my subscription. Ridiculous how hard it is to leave find anywhere you can leave feedback.

This is NOT a new idea. This is a request that Spotify stop messing up its own platform.

One song will play constantly in shuffle, despite it not being in the queue. For example - I have added “Song A” into my playlist. I then press shuffle. Song A will then play every second or third song. It won’t be listed in the queue, it won’t say I’ve just played it. It just pops up. Randomly. Fix it you crazy people.
