I am also having this problem. It appears random and it is happening for all artists. It also happens for random singles. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the desktop app. No change. Spotify for Windows (1.1.97.962.g24733a46)
For example:
Situation #1: I'm trying to play 311. I click the search "311" and click play on the artist. The play bar changes to blank and nothing plays.
If I click on 311 to show their popular songs and albums, I can't play a single from here either.
Situation #2: I search "Hey, Good Lookin'" by Hank Williams. I click play on the single. Nothing happens.
Situation #3: I search "Amber" by 311. I click play on the single. It plays.
EDIT: I followed the Spotify instruction on how to clear your cache and it briefly fixed situation #1. The how to article is here: https://support.spotify.com/us/article/storage-information/. HOWEVER, now it only played 1 song then stopped. It doesn't continue on to the next song like normal. After playing the song, it returned to not functioning.
Hey folks,
Thanks for posting in the Community and welcome.
@rvrecords1, is this happening on another computer? It’d be awesome if you could check. You can ask for the computer of a relative or a friend to open your account and check.
Would you mind sending us the links to the songs is not playing? You can follow the steps in this article to do it.
@rpkincer , we recommend you to start off with a clean reinstall of the Spotify app on your device. By doing that the app can be up-to-date and you can make sure the cache is not leading to this inconvenience. You can see the steps for a clean reinstall here.
If that doesn't do the trick, it'll help us a lot if you send us the links to the songs you mentioned in your next reply.
Folks, we'd like to check, are you seeing the songs grayed out? If yes, we' like to add some insights. We’d love to have all the music, videos and podcasts in the world on Spotify, and we hope it will ever be! However, there’s content that’s not currently available (or its availability differs between countries). It all depends on permissions from rights holders. So! it's possible some tunes are grayed out, and not possible to play most likely because they're no available anymore.
Keep us in the loop!
No grayed out songs.

I have the same problem but I have also found a workaround. You can add a song that you are unable to play to your liked songs and it will start working normally. You can even remove it immediately afterwards from your liked songs and it will keep on working normally. Hopefully this helps with troubleshooting the issue.
Example song that I can't play:

Example song that I can play after liking it:

I'm using Spotify for Windows 1.1.98.691.gf759311c
Hey folks,
Thanks for sending over this info.
As a next step, we'd recommend checking your Windows hosts file for any lines containing Spotify and removing them as described in this guide.
Let us know if that helps.
Sorry for my bad grammar.
I also having the same issues. I tried to make a clean install, downgrade the app to 1.1.96.785.g464c973a and change to another network environment, both of them didn't solve the problem. And when I add the song that having this issues, it empty my play queue. Web version not having this bug.
Here is the example album that I can't play:

Hey @MineTestGaming,
Thank you for your reply in this thread.
We've tried to replicate this issue but it seems to work as expected on our end.
On another note, we always recommend that you keep the app running with the newest version available. In this case, it's a good idea to go for an update in order to see if the things will get back to normal, as Spotify gets better with every update!
Hope this helps.
I checked the Hosts file as recommended. Spotify wasn't listed. No changes made.
Checked the hosts file and no mentions of spotify or fastly.
I did some more testing myself and noticed that disabling my VPN (Freedome) seems to fix the issue even if I enable it immediately after. Is there any reason why using a VPN would affect how Spotify works? I'm using the same country with my VPN where I'm from and where my account is set.
I've had the same issue for a couple of months. If I search for an artist or song on my desktop I can only play the song unless I've liked it. I don't necessarily want to like a song before I've even heard it. I just re-installed the app and it did not fix the problem. No problems on my iphone.
Hey folks,
Thanks for your replies and for the info shared.
@rpkincer, would you mind sending us the Spotify version you have currently running? And just to confirm, do you use a VPN on your computer? If yes, try disabling it to see if that makes any difference.
@skullnen, we're glad to know this is now fixed. To answer your question, Spotify doesn't officially support VPN. This means that inconveniences with the app while using a VPN are expected behavior.
@frizzmatt, just to confirm, did you follow the steps in this article to perform a clean (more thorough) reinstall? By doing that the app can be up-to-date and you can make sure the cache is not leading to this inconvenience. If you haven't yet, give it a try and let us know how it goes. It'd also be pretty helpful if you send us the Spotify version you have running in the affected device.
Keep us in the loop!
I tried the latest version but still not solve.
And another account in the same device is not working too
I tried my work pc in my company network using the same account and it didn't have the problem.
Hey there,
Thanks for the replies.
The described experience looks a lot like the on from this ongoing issue thread. Could you confirm this is the case?
You can check if you're able to play the songs when they're added to your Liked Songs collection as proposed by @skullnen .
If the issue is the same, have a look at the info from the linked thread and if you have the time to do so, help us in collecting the necessary logs.
Keep us posted,
Cheers!
I am having similar issues where I can play songs from a playlist - but if I go directly to an artists page I can not play anything there. When selecting a song to play the bottom song status bar remains grayed out. I noticed this as an issue 12/2/22
Account Tier: Premium
Windows Version: Version 10.0.22621 Build 2262
OS: Windows 11
I am running a VPN [NordVPN] and Malwarebytes Pro but have been running them for years now with no issues. I also have not had a recent update to either systems.
Steps taken - Cleared Cache on desktop along with all downloaded items
Signed out and signed back in
Attempted to play on Web player - also does not work
Uninstalled and reinstalled a new downloaded version of Spotify
This functionality does work fine on my iPhone so it seems to be localized to just desktop features.
Hey @jasvicious,
