Step 1

NEXT STEP

Make entire play queue editable

There's currently two queues in Spotify:

  • The editable queue. ("Queued tracks")
  • The locked queue. ("Next tracks")

If you press the Skjermbilde-2015-04-10-20.52.53.png queue button with tracks in both lists, you can see that these two queues follow each other. The editable queue always plays first.

The problem is having a locked queue at all.

You can't empty it without interrupting playback, and you'll have to use a workaround to do so. You can't reorder it or add or delete songs. After finishing the editable queue, Spotify always continues playback from the locked queue.

The workaround is starting playback at the very last item on a page. The locked queue will then have no further items. Then you can continue by purely using the queue right-click function instead of double-click or enter. This adds items to the editable queue. These tracks can then be reordered and deleted as you wish.

This UI behaviour is, however, not very user-friendly and quite frankly really annoying. It's also very unconventional having two queues in a music player. I've never seen any other software using either a dual-queue system or a locked queue system.

Here's a good implementation suggestion from user Styrke:

----

Google Play Music's queue system is really easy to understand and use. Just do what they do.

I can describe it by three (3) easy bullets:

  • Double clicking a song starts playing it and adds the rest of the list that the song came from to the queue. (The queue gets overwritten)
  • Right click one or more songs to add them to the top ("play next") or the bottom ("add to queue") of the queue.
  • Everything in the queue can be removed or rearranged by drag-and-drop

----

EDIT: I updated the terminology to match the new Spotify. Items are no longer yellow and white, but are now under separate headings and in the same color instead.

Hey everyone, now you can edit your Play Queue on your Desktop, Android and iOS device. You can add songs to 'Up Next', remove songs and clear the queue. Thanks for continuing to bring us great ideas!

Delete all music from the queue by Ctrl-A, Delete in version >> 0.9.x <<   You can use 0.9.x to debug the 1.0.11 jammed queue.

@melankeasked the right question:

__________________________________________________

. . . .   "Can you remove all music from queue In version 0.9.x ?"

__________________________________________________

The answer is yes.  Version 0.9.x will debug your 1.0.11 queue for you!

If your 1.0.11 queue gets stuck in one of those beautiful infinite loops, you can either delete that infinity of 1.0.11 loops 50 at a time-- or you can bring up an instance of 0.9.x on that same network and, in the lower right corner of your 1.0.11 "Choose device to play on" to be your 0.9.x instance-- Your stuck and undeletable 1.0.11 queue will replicate to your 0.9.x instance-- Ctrl-A, Delete in your 0.9.x instance will clear the part of your 1.0.11 queue that bugs you-- and voilà, you can watch the debugging fix to your 1.0.11 stuck queue replicate back to your 1.0.11 screen.

Did it work?

I use Windows XP and Windows Vista for either Spotify version-- depending on what I am doing.  We should look at 0.9.x and 1.0.x as completely different and alternative "tools" for completely different things.

We are all experimenting with how to get unlimited access to that goldmine of Spotify music inventory.  Thanks for everyone's help and assistance.

Cheers . . . .

To clear or delete items from the queue, do the following in version 1.0.11.

@Doughnuts,
@saarepet,
@melanke  There is some improvement in the recent releases of 1.0.11; would you agree?

@user-removed asked the right question to get me thinking about what it would take to debug 10.11 . . .

New to Spotify and came on here trying to find out how to clear or delete items from the queue .  . . .

_________________________________________________________________________

* There are Three sections in the "queue"-- 1) Current track, 2) Queued tracks, and 3) Next tracks.

* To clear Queued tracks-- [Ctrl-A, DeleteKey] several times in the "Queue" screen-- reached by Clicking on the "Queue" button in the lower right of the screen.

* To clear Next tracks-- Run the following playlist-- Then click NextTrack.

** If the above fancy Spotify graphic just goes to Spotify advertising, please Drag this >> Track  << into the Ctrl-L Search box on your player, then Start the play of the playlist that appears, then click NextTrack.

* Notice that after all of the above, the UnEditable portions of your "Queue" should be gone.  If not-- see the last item below.

If someone finds a track of "just plain silence", I will substitute that track of "just plain silence".  (smile-- We have to realize that this Spotify "User interface" is just a video game to keep us from getting to the Prize too easily-- which Prize is the vast and eternally interesting Spotify "archive of music".)

What fills the "Queue"?
* "Add to Queue" under RightClick on a [Selection of Tracks] adds to the bottom of the "Queued tracks" section.  If you want to add to the top of the "Queued tracks", drag the selection of Tracks to the "Queue" icon in the lower right, Hold down the drag button until the Queue opens, then drag the selection to where you want it, and Release.

* "Play" on a Playlist, Radio, or Browse icon replaces what is in the "Next tracks" section.

Why are there two sections of the "Queue"?
* The "Queued tracks" section is the part of the Queue that you can always Move, Add, Delete Tracks.

* The "Next tracks" will play at the end of your session-- after all of your "Queued tracks" have played.  There is a way for you to edit the "Next tracks" section-- but you may not like the way that Spotify will take over and make the "Next tracks" uneditable if you click on any Play, Radio, or Browse icon.  The "Next tracks" is the Pandora section of the Queue where Pandora force feeds you with tracks that it wants to give you depending on which Play, Radio, or Browse icon you click.

What if Ctrl-A, Delete does not empty the "Queued tracks" section"?
* You can unjam your "Queued tracks" section by 1) Opening a >> 0.9.x <<  session on the same network, 2) Choosing the 0.9.x instance under the "Choose device to Play on" in the lower right of the screen, 3) Ctrl-A, Delete in the "Play queue" of the fully functional 0.9.x instance-- and the Unjam of your queue will replicate to your toy 1.0.11 instance .  Did that work?

Cheers . . . .

@rednblu, no, I don't think there is any improvement.  I'm using the latest 1.0.12.161 verson on Windows (I also use it on Mac but not sure of that version).  Play queue management still has the same issues.

I appreciate the fact that you're trying to help but there is a fundamental issue with queue management in the Spotify desktop clients and Spotify are ignoring it.  Workarounds are nothing more than band-aids and they're not even really practical at the moment.  Spotify has an excellent music catalog and plenty of good features but this issue really takes away from what should be a good experience.

melanke

I've updated Spotify this morning and...

Looks like the main issues was fixed, but I am not sure, I am afraid to refill my queue with a lot of musics and get the infinite queue problem again.

What I noticed when I logged in:

- My queue was cleared;

- I added some music to play and some music to queue and now I have a queue splitted in 2, and when I add music to queue it goes to the end of the first queue, Is easy to manage the first queue.

Looks like they made REALLY GREAT KLUDGE haha, but works perfect for me, at least what I have tested so far.

If I get any problem again I will report.

Thanks Spotify 🙂

melanke

Maybe I am happy just because my queue was cleared, maybe actually nothing really changed haha, but I will try to keep my queue small

The only advantage I found in Apple Music vs Spotify is that you can easily edit the queue in Apple Music, but you cant in Spotify.

As simple drag & drop would be great! I still prefer Spotify over apple music in general.

rednblu

What part of "edit" the queue

Can't you do?

I ask, @javierpdlr, because I am attempting to put into very specific words a request for the Spotify decision-makers.

I am using Window Desktop 1.0.12 and I can easily edit the Spotify queue.

What very specific request should I make to the Spotify decision-makers?

Guys seriously, I just realized that you can't delete songs from the queue -- first time I tried it and you can't.  I'm a premium member, or rather, I was a minute ago, but you know what, this is annoying enough that now I'm not.  I just spent half an hour on something that didn't work on what should have been a trivial one minute exercise.  Fortunately unsubscribing DOES work, but maybe you should fix delete from queue instead, so fewer paying customers would test your unsubscribe logic for you.

rednblu

On Windows Desktop app, Drag this >> Track  << into the Ctrl-L Search box.   Do Enter.  Then double Click the track that appears.  Then Click NextTrack.  You may now edit all of your Queue.

You are welcome.

Did that work for you, @JohnSpotless?

JohnSpotless

@rednblu I appreciate the suggestion since it seems to be the best one can do under the circumstances, but as a user interface fix, are you serious?  This is as though I purchased a refrigerator that only allows me to take out a cup of milk at a time even though I bought a half gallon and even if I have old stuff rotting in there that needs to be cleaned out.  I can't clean the refrigerator.  So you're saying if I put a certain brand of baloney in the fridge, that will make it so I can then clean out the fridge?

Fortunately, this refrigerator also comes with a free version that I also can't clean out, but for free it's not a bad refrigerator.  So I'm going to thank you once again for your effort, and I'm going to go back to my job and listen to some nice tunes on my free refrigerator. 🙂

Have a good day.

John
